Yemen confidently tipped off the home U18 Asia Championship. The hosts outscored Iraq in preliminary Group D action. Yemen dominated in the first half to build a decisive margin.
Yemen played aggressive defense right from the start. They limited Iraq to just four points in almost nine opening minutes. Yemen managed to pile up a 13:8 lead ten minutes into the game. Yemen went on a 22:0 run in the second stanza to put their opponents away. Yemen ensured a comfortable 35:14 lead at the interval. Things hardly changed in the third quarter. Yemen stayed impassable defensively as they held the visitors to only 7 points in the period. Yemen entered the fourth quarter up by 37 points and never looked back en route to the victory. Mohammed Yaeesh (182-G-93) top-scored with 21 points to pace Yemen. Sabri Sadaqah (188-F-93) added 17 points and 8 rebounds in the victory. Amjed Awadh knocked down 12 points for Iraq. Safaa Al-Saedi contributed 10 points in defeat.
