VBA Round 7: Dragons edge Dolphins by two points

The most exciting game of round 7 in the VBA took place in Danang. This derby game ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 3rd placed Dolphins (4-3) to fifth ranked Dragons (4-6) 64-62 on Friday evening. Dragons forced 20 Dolphins turnovers. Strangely Dolphins outrebounded Dragons 53-36 including 39 on the defensive glass. American point guard Ed Horton (186-1985, college: Murray St.) fired a double-double by scoring 19 points and 15 rebounds for the winners. Filipino point guard Michael Soy (182-1997, college: Algonquin) chipped in 27 points. Dragons' coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. American center Dominique Tham (195-1996, college: Mount Olive) produced a double-double by scoring 22 points and 23 rebounds for lost side. Dragons have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain fifth place with 4-6 record. Dolphins at the other side keep the third position with three games lost. They share it with Buffaloes. Dragons are looking forward to face higher ranked Buffaloes (#3) in Hanoi in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Dolphins will play at home against the league's second-placed Heat and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Dolphins (4-3) against fourth ranked Buffaloes (4-3) on Tuesday night. Visiting Dolphins were defeated by Buffaloes in a tough game in Hanoi 73-82. The game was dominated by American players. Worth to mention a great performance of point guard Jeffery Stubbs (189-1991, college: Jackson St.) who helped to win the game recording a triple-double by scoring 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Shane Henry contributed with 18 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. Buffaloes' coach Eric Weissling allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. point guard CJ Jackson (185-1996, college: Ohio St., agency: Blacktop Management) answered with 26 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for Dolphins. Buffaloes moved-up to third place, which they share with defeated Dolphins. Buffaloes will play against Dragons (#5) in Danang in the next round. Dolphins will play at home against the league's second-placed Heat and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game in Can Tho supposed to be also quite interesting. Second ranked Wings (6-1) played at the court of 7th ranked Catfish (1-7). Wings did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 104-84 on Saturday. It was a great evening for Devon Thomas who led his team to a victory with a triple-double by scoring 46 points (!!!), 16 rebounds and 10 assists. At the losing side DeAngelo Hamilton responded with a double-double by scoring 36 points (!!!) and 13 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Wings have a solid series of four victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Heat. Catfish lost seventh consecutive game. They stay at the bottom place with seven games lost. Wings will meet at home league's second-placed Heat in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Catfish will play again against the league's leader Wings (#1) in Ho Chi Minh and hope to win that game.

In the last two games of round 7 Warriors were defeated by Dragons in Danang 73-69. Warriors were beaten by Dragons at home 65-72.

Dragons - Dolphins 64-62

The game in Can Tho supposed to be also quite interesting. Second ranked Wings (6-1) played at the court of 7th ranked Catfish (1-7). Wings did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 104-84 on Saturday. Wings dominated down low during the game scoring 74 of its points in the paint compared to Catfish's 32. They outrebounded Catfish 51-38 including a 37-25 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great evening for American point guard Devon Thomas (183-1994, college: Texas Tech) who led his team to a victory with a triple-double by scoring 46 points (!!!), 16 rebounds and 10 assists. His fellow American import forward DeSean Parsons (201-1995, college: Portland St.) helped adding 23 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists. At the losing side American center DeAngelo Hamilton (203-1990, college: WSU) responded with a double-double by scoring 36 points (!!!) and 13 rebounds and guard Bueno Castilo (180-1999) scored 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Horton is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Dragons' coach used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side American guard Clay Guillozet (193-1997, college: Valdosta St.) responded with a double-double by scoring 32 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists and naturalized American Justin Young (193-1993) scored 6 points and 9 rebounds. Dragons have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain fifth place with 4-6 record. Warriors lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with six games lost. Worth to mention Horton played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped get the job in pro basketball. At the losing side American Garrius Holloman (198-1989, college: BCU) responded with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists and the other American import guard Clay Guillozet (193-1997, college: Valdosta St.) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points and 14 rebounds. Warriors' coach Predrag Lukic rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Dragons have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain fifth place with 4-6 record.
