THE Southeast Asia Basketball Association women's basketball championship scheduled mid-October in Thailand may be reduced to only five teams from the original six following a decision by Vietnam to withdraw from the competition, citing funding problems for its team.

With Vietnam out of the picture, the field will be composed of host Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Patrick Gregorio said that in the original schedule, the RP-Cebuana women's basketball team was scheduled to play Vietnam in its first game, before facing dangerous Thailand.

But with Vietnam deciding not to play, the Filipinas will be forced to play the Thais outright.
