DUBAI — Hosts UAE defeated Bahrain 59-34 in their opening match of the basketball competition of the 8th AGCC Ladies Tournament which was officially inaugurated at the Sharjah Ladies Club on Saturday night.
The event was inaugurated in the presence of Her Highness Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and the Chairperson of the Sharjah Ladies Club, who is also the patron of the tournament.
Organised and coordinated by the club to meet international standards, the ceremony saw the attendance of Her Highness and captured everyone's attention with a combination of delightful entertainment events and activities.
Her Highness welcomed all participating teams and spectators to the much-awaited event and announced that this event is at the level of regional and international sports events and gives sportswomen the opportunity to experience a professional sports event.
The biggest surprise, however, was the participation of Saudi Arabia, for the first time in the history of the tournament. The Saudi team, accompanied by three officials and a coach, will participate in the singles table tennis event.
Noura Al Nouman, president of the organising committee, said: “We would like to thank Her Highness Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi and the large crowd who have honoured us with their presence at opening ceremony. We also thank all the participants and their team representatives for helping us make this event the biggest ladies sports event in the region.
His Highness Dr. Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, wants to give an equal opportunity to the sportswomen of the Arab countries to show their talents in the field of international sports and prove that this could be done in accordance with the ethical Islamic values.”
