Manama claimed a third consecutive win by beating Al Wasl of the UAE 85-65 to complete their first round matches in Group 'A' of the 36th GCC Basketball Clubs Championship played last night at Al Ahli Club in Dubai. It was Manama's third win in the group as they secured the top position with 6 points. They will be playing the second round match tomorrow against the fourth best team in Group 'B' which most probably will be Oman's Nizwa who lost earlier to Al Ahli of Bahrain. Manama showed an excellent teamwork and proved themselves as one of the favourites to win the GCC title this year. They placed third here last year when the tournament was held in Kuwait. The quarters scores were as follows: 16-14 (Manama), 16-16 (draw), 30-16 (Manama), 23-19 (Manama). Austin Daye (211-F-88, college: Gonzaga, agency: Priority Sports) was again Manama's best scorer with 18 points. Backing him up were Kadeem Coleby (206-C/F-89, college: Wichita St.) who scored 17 points, Mohammed Hussain with 11, and Maytham Jameel and Ahmed Najaf with 9 each. Meanwhile, Bahrain's Al Ahli scored their first victory by defeating Oman's Nizwa 90-83 in a Group 'B' match. The victory allowed Al Ahli to avoid facing Manama in the second round. Al Ahli now have 3 points from their victory and a defeat in the opening game against Al Rayyan, and they will be playing today their last game in the group against defending champions and hosts Al Ahli of the UAE. Al Ahli secured the third place position of the group, where they will take on the second best team of Group 'A' which will be either be Ohod of Saudi Arabia or Al Sadd of Qatar, who will both play today. The quarters scores of Al Ahli and Nizwa match were as follows: 21-19 (Nizwa), 28-13 (Al Ahli), 32-24 (Al Ahli), 25-11 (Nizwa). Al Ahli's best scorers were Lorn Woods who finished with 23 points, along with Hisham Sarhan who hit 17 points. Ryan Richard had 16 and Sayed Kadem Majed added 11, while team captain Hussain Shaker scored 10 points. In another match, Al Ahli of the UAE defeated Al Rayyan of Qatar 80-62.
