The USA heads into the Round of 16 at the 2023 FIBA U19 Women's World Cup after clinching the top overall spot in Group B with a 112-49 victory over Chinese Taipei on Tuesday at Sports Complex Espartales in Madrid, Spain. Defense was the story of the game for the Americans as they frustrated the Chinese Taipei offense for the full 40 minutes. In the first quarter, the U.S. held their opponent to 4-of-21 shooting from the field, including 0-for-9 from three-point range. Chinese Taipei didn't connect on their first 3-pointer until midway through the second quarter but at that point the Americans already led by double figures (35-17). By halftime the U.S. led 52-20 and the Chinese Taipei shooting percentage was held to 19.0%. Joyce Edwards (190-F-2006) scored 11 of her 19 points in those first 20 minutes by going 5-for-7 from the field. The USA would win the second half too, 60-29. The American offense surpassed the century mark for the second time this tournament on a Hannah Hidalgo 3-pointer with 2:50 left in the fourth quarter (101-45). She finished the game with 16 points and four steals. Elsewhere on the USA roster, five players scored at least 15 points. In addition to Edwards and Hidalgo, Londynn Jones (163-G-2004) (17 points), Breya Cunningham (193-F-2005, college: USA NT U16) (16) and Kiki Rice (180-G-2004) (15) all paced the United States in scoring.
