Robert Upshaw gets MVP of the Week award for Taiwanese T1 League- March 10, 2023
The 28-year old center had the game-high 32 points adding nine rebounds and six assists for Tainan GH in his team's victory, helping them to crush TB Herobears (#4, 9-12) with 16-point margin 111-95. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Tainan GH maintains the 2nd position in Taiwanese T1 League. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Tainan GH will need more victories to improve their 13-8 record. In the team's last game Upshaw had a remarkable 66.7% from 2-point range and got four three-pointers out of 9 attempts. He turned to be Tainan GH's top player in his first season with the team. The University of Washington graduate has very impressive stats this year. Upshaw is in league's top in points (4th best: 21.8ppg), rebounds (7th best: 11.1rpg) and averages solid 1.5bpg and 51.5% FGP. The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young American center Dwight Howard (211-C-1985) of Taoyuan L.. Howard impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 30 points and 31 rebounds. Bad luck as Taoyuan L. lost that game 95-101 to the higher-ranked N.Taipei CTBC (#1, 16-4). Taoyuan L. are still at the very bottom. 13 lost games are too many comparing to just four victories Taoyuan L. managed to get this year. Howard is a newcomer at Taoyuan L. and it seems he did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 26.0ppg (#2). His other stats are also decent: 15.9rpg and 5.9apg. The third best performed player last round was American Michael Qualls (197-G-1994) of TB Herobears (#4). Qualls got into 30-points club by scoring 43 points in the last round. He went also for eleven rebounds and four assists. Despite Qualls' great performance TB Herobears lost 97-109 to #3 ranked Kaohsiung A.. But his team cannot count on just a single shooter as he also needs help of the other teammates especially in such crucial game. The chances of TB Herobears ranking at the top of the league, however are very questionable as they have already lost 12 games, recording just nine victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Qualls could help TB Herobears to bring them higher in the standings. Qualls has a very solid season. In 2 games in Taiwan he scored 29.5ppg. Other top performing players last week: 4. Jason Brickman (183-G-1991) of Kaohsiung A. - 22 points, 8 rebounds and 11 assists 5. Mindaugas Kupsas (216-C-1991) of Kaohsiung A. - 28 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists 6. Sim Bhullar (226-C-1992) of Tainan GH - 20 points, 17 rebounds and 2 assists 7. Edgaras Zelionis (207-PF-1989) of N.Taipei CTBC - 27 points and 7 rebounds 8. Samuel Deguara (230-C-1991) of Tainan GH - 21 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists 9. Nick King (201-F-1995) of N.Taipei CTBC - 27 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists 10. Wei-Han Lin (178-PG-1990) of N.Taipei CTBC - 15 points, 9 rebounds and 13 assists The Player of the week is selected based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
