SBL Round 9: Leader KKL loses to Fubon Braves - Jan 13, 2019

SBL is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 9 rounds left. The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The round ended with defeat of the leader and favorites losing the games. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

Top ranked KKL (13-8) recorded its eighth loss against fourth ranked Fubon Braves on Sunday night. Fubon Braves were defeated by fourth ranked Fubon Braves (10-8) 81-71. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of KKL. Fubon Braves made 24-of-30 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Fubon Braves made 8 blocks. The best player for the winners was American forward Tony Mitchell (203-92, college: N.Texas) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks. Costa Rican-Belizean forward Charles Garcia (208-88, college: Seattle) chipped in 21 points and 5 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was American power forward Walter Sharpe (206-86, college: UAB) who recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Fubon Braves maintains fourth place with 10-8 record. KKL at the other side still keeps top position with eight games lost. Fubon Braves are looking forward to face league's second-placed Yulon Luxgen in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. KKL will play against Pauian and is hoping to win this game.
Another exciting game was between third ranked Yulon Luxgen and second-best Taiwan Beer where Yulon Luxgen (12-8) beat Taiwan Beer (11-9) on the road 80-75. It was a key game for the second position in the league. It was a good game for American power forward Eric Dawson (206-84, college: Midwestern St., agency: Interperformances) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!) and 21 rebounds. Cheng-Ju Lu contributed with 28 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Lithuanian swingman Edvinas Seskus (196-95) answered with 19 points for Taiwan Beer. Taiwan Beer's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Yulon Luxgen moved-up to second place. Taiwan Beer at the other side dropped to the third position with nine games lost. Yulon Luxgen will play against Fubon Braves (#4) in the next round. Taiwan Beer will play against Bank of Taiwan and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Dacin Tigers will meet league's leader KKL in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Taiwan Beer will play against Bank of Taiwan and hope to secure a win.

The best player for the winners was Zoran Vrkic who scored 22 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. KKL have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 13-8 record. Defending champion Pauian keeps the fifth position with nine games lost. KKL will face Dacin Tigers (#6) in Taipei in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Pauian will play again against the league's leader KKL and hope to win that game.

Other games of round 9 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
bottom-ranked Bank of Taiwan was defeated by Taiwan Beer 87-71. Fubon Braves lost to defending champion Pauian 90-95. Dacin Tigers won against Bank of Taiwan 99-81.



Dacin Tigers - Taiwan Beer 102-88

Very important is a loss of second ranked Taiwan Beer (11-9) against sixth ranked Dacin Tigers (9-9) on Thursday night. Taiwan Beer was defeated by Dacin Tigers 102-88. It was a great shooting night for Dacin Tigers especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.4 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Dacin Tigers made 7 blocks. American guard OJ Mayo (193-87, college: USC) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 37 points (!!!), 12 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners and the former international forward Yi-Hui Lin (193-86) chipped in 28 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. The best for the losing side was Lithuanian swingman Edvinas Seskus (196-95) with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and Ukrainian power forward Igor Zaytsev (210-89) scored 21 points and 6 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Dacin Tigers moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Pauian. There was no surprise when 7th ranked Bank of Taiwan (3-16) was defeated by second ranked Taiwan Beer (11-9) 87-71 on Friday. Taiwan Beer dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Bank of Taiwan's 24. They outrebounded Bank of Taiwan 43-29 including 31 on the defensive glass. Taiwan Beer looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Bank of Taiwan's players. The best player for the winners was Ukrainian power forward Igor Zaytsev (210-89) who had a double-double by scoring 16 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists. Lithuanian swingman Edvinas Seskus (196-95) chipped in 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Four Taiwan Beer players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American-Dominican forward Angel Nunez (203-91, college: S.Florida) who recorded a double-double by scoring 25 points and 14 rebounds and American power forward Antwan Space (206-93, college: Massachusetts, agency: Haylett Sports) added 15 points and 7 rebounds respectively.
