KBL Round 5 of Regular Season

Round 5 means everything may happen in KBL as the season just started. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The biggest surprise of round 5 was guest Mobis Phoebus' (3-3) road victory over Seoul Knights (#8) 78-75 on Friday evening. Mobis Phoebus looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was who scored 22 points. American center Rayshaun Hammonds (206-1998, college: Georgia) chipped in 16 points and 8 rebounds. American center Jameel Warney (203-1994, college: Stony Brook) produced a double-double by scoring 34 points (!!!), 15 rebounds and 4 assists for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Mobis Phoebus moved-up to sixth place. Seoul Knights lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with four games lost. They share it with Sono SG. Mobis Phoebus are looking forward to face higher ranked Anyang (#4) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Seoul Knights will play against Wonju DB (#3) and are hoping to prove to their supporters that they can break losing series.
Important game to mention about took place in Wonju. Second ranked Egis (4-1) saved a 2-point victory on the road edging 4th placed Wonju DB (4-2) 86-84 in the game for the first place. It was a key game for the top position in the league. orchestrated the victory by scoring 23 points and 6 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). Shawn Long contributed with 14 points and 15 rebounds for the winners. American center Henry Ellenson (208-1997, college: Marquette) answered with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 12 rebounds for Wonju DB. Wonju DB's coach Sang-Bum Lee tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Egis have a solid series of four victories in a row. KCC Egis keep a position of league leader. Wonju DB at the other side dropped to the second place with two games lost. They share the position with 3 other teams. KCC Egis will play against Sono SG (#8) in Daegu in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Wonju DB will play at home against Suwon KT (#5) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Anyang moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated LG Sakers. Anyang will meet at home Mobis Phoebus (#6) in the next round. LG Sakers will play against Daegu (#10) and hope to secure a win.

Other games of round 5 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Sono SG was defeated by Wonju DB in a road game 83-76. LG Sakers beat Seoul Thunders at home 75-64. Winless Daegu lost to Suwon KT on the opponent's court 65-68.

LG Sakers - Anyang 62-70

Very important is a home loss of third ranked Sakers (4-2) against fourth ranked Anyang (4-2) on Wednesday night. Host Sakers were defeated by Anyang in a tough game in Changwon 62-70. American power forward Johnny OBryant III (207-1993, college: LSU, agency: Slash Sports) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 11 rebounds for the winners and Filipino Rhenz Abando (188-1998) chipped in 18 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). responded with 19 points and Egyptian center Assem Marei (206-1992, college: MSU) scored 2 points and 10 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Anyang moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated LG Sakers. Anyang will meet at home Mobis Phoebus (#6) in the next round. LG Sakers will play against Daegu (#10) and hope to secure a win.

There was no surprise when 8th ranked Skygunners (2-4) were defeated on the road by fourth ranked Wonju DB (4-2) 83-76 on Saturday. American guard Ethan Alvano (185-1996, college: CSUSM) stepped up and scored 28 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals for the winners and his fellow American import center Henry Ellenson (208-1997, college: Marquette) chipped in 22 points and 13 rebounds. Alvano is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Filipino Kevin Quiambao (193-2001) responded with 29 points and 6 rebounds and American power forward Nathan Knight (208-1997, college: William & Mary) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points and 14 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Wonju DB moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Skygunners keeps the eighth position with four games lost. They share it with Seoul Knights. Wonju DB will meet at home Suwon KT (#5) in the next round. Sono SG will play against the league's leader KCC Egis and hope to secure a win.

No shocking result in a game in Changwon where third ranked Sakers (4-2) defeated 7th ranked Samsung Thunders (2-3) 75-64 on Saturday. LG Sakers had a 20-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. Egyptian center Assem Marei (206-1992, college: MSU) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 28 points, 20 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals for the winners and chipped in 10 points and 8 rebounds. Canadian Andrew Nicholson (206-1989, college: St.Bonaventure) responded with 22 points and 5 rebounds and his fellow American import center Henry Ellenson (208-1997, college: Marquette) scored 9 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending champion moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Samsung Thunders keep the seventh position with three games lost. LG Sakers will meet at home bottom-ranked Daegu (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Seoul Thunders will have a break next round.

Very expected game in Busan where bottom-ranked Daegu (0-6) was edged by fifth ranked Sonicboom (4-2) 68-65 on Saturday. However just three-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Strangely Daegu outrebounded Suwon KT 46-32 including a 32-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. Jun-Young Park stepped up and scored 8 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and chipped in 13 points and 4 assists. Four Sonicboom players scored in double figures. The former international forward Ricardo Ratliffe (203-1989, college: Missouri) responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 20 rebounds and Filipino guard Samjosef Belangel (177-1999) scored 13 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Suwon KT moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Daegu still closes the standings with six games lost. Suwon KT will meet Wonju DB (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Daegu will play against the league's second-placed LG Sakers (#2) in Changwon and hopes to get finally their first victory.
