KBL Round 17: Anyang lose to Seoul Knights

Top ranked Anyang (16-6) recorded its sixth loss at the home court on Sunday night. Hosts were edged by fifth ranked Seoul Knights (12-12) 82-81. Seoul Knights dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Anyang's 30. Strangely Anyang outrebounded Seoul Knights 43-31 including 17 on the offensive glass. The best player for the winners was American center Jameel Warney (203-1994, college: Stony Brook) who had a double-double by scoring 32 points and 12 rebounds. The former international Joon-Young Choi (200-1994) chipped in 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Filipino Rhenz Abando (188-1998) produced 30 points and 6 rebounds for the hosts. Anyang's coach Seung-Ki Kim rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Defending champion moved-up to fourth place. Anyang at the other side still keeps top position with six games lost. Seoul Knights are looking forward to face higher ranked Mobis Phoebus (#3) in Ulsan in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Anyang will play at home against the league's second-placed LG Sakers and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Mobis Phoebus (12-9) against eighth ranked Seoul Thunders (10-14) on Monday night. Host Mobis Phoebus were defeated by Seoul Thunders in Ulsan 78-68. The former international forward Jung-Hyun Lee (191-1987) orchestrated the victory by scoring 16 points and 4 assists. Emanuel Terry contributed with 10 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. American forward Gaige Prim (203-1999, college: Missouri St.) answered with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 15 rebounds for Mobis Phoebus. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Seoul Thunders moved-up to seventh place. Mobis Phoebus at the other side keep the third position with nine games lost. Seoul Thunders will play against Wonju DB (#8) on the road in the next round. Mobis Phoebus will play against Seoul Knights (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Changwon. Second ranked LG Sakers faced 4th placed Goyang. Host LG Sakers (14-9) defeated guests from Daegu (11-10) 79-73. Assem Marei stepped up with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. LG Sakers' coach Sung-Won Cho used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. Dedric Lawson responded with a double-double by scoring 12 points, 14 rebounds and 9 assists. LG Sakers maintains second place with 14-9 record having just one point less than leader Anyang. Loser Goyang dropped to the fifth position with ten games lost. LG Sakers will meet league's leader Anyang on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Goyang will play against KCC Egis (#9) in Jeonju and hope to secure a win.

Other games of round 17 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Wonju DB crushed KoGas in a road game 111-80. KCC Egis beat Suwon KT at home 89-77. Seoul Knights won against KoGas on the opponent's court 78-73.

KoGas - Wonju DB 80-111

There was a minor upset in Inchon where 6th ranked KoGas (10-12) were crushed by eighth ranked Wonju DB (9-11) 111-80 on Sunday. Wonju DB shot 63.9 percent from the field and made 18-of-20 free shots (90.0 percent) during the game. Wonju DB outrebounded KoGas 30-18 including 22 on the defensive glass. They shot the lights out from three sinking 15 long-distance shots on high 55.6 percentage. Wonju DB looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by KoGas' players. The former international guard Kyungmin Doo (184-1991) stepped up and scored 43 points (!!!) and 8 assists (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!) for the winners and the former international center Jongkyu Kim (207-1991) chipped in 15 points and 7 assists (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). The former international forward Dae-Heon Lee (198-1992) responded with 23 points and American forward Murphy Holloway (201-1990, college: Ole Miss, agency: Octagon Europe) scored 8 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Wonju DB maintains eighth place with 9-11 record. Loser KoGas keep the sixth position with 12 games lost. Wonju DB will meet at home higher ranked Seoul Thunders (#7) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. KoGas will play against Suwon KT in Busan and hope to secure a win.

Seoul Thunders made 17-of-22 charity shots (77.3 percent) during the game. The former international forward Jung-Hyun Lee (191-1987) orchestrated the victory by scoring 16 points and 4 assists. American forward Emanuel Terry (206-1996, college: LMU) contributed with 10 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Five Seoul Thunders players scored in double figures.
