Despite an inspired performance by American import Xavier Alexander (198-G-88, college: S.Nazarene), who scored the most points (26) and rebounds (9) in the game, the Singapore Slingers were defeated 73-67 by defending champions Shanghai Sharks in the semi-finals of the Merlion Cup on Saturday (Sept 23). There was little to separate the two sides at the OCBC Arena, as the hosts trailed 16-18 in the first period and entered the half-time break three points down at 33-36. Both teams scored 21 points in the third quarter of what was proving to be a tense last-four clash. But the Chinese team pulled cleared in the final quarter with 16 points to 13 from the Slingers to seal their spot in the final. In the Adelaide 36ers-Jeonju KCC Egis clash, Australian forward Mitch Creek (195-F/G-92) starred for the 36ers with a double-double (27 points and 11 rebounds) in their 94-72 victory. The Sharks will face the Australian side while the Slingers, who finished fourth last year after a defeat by Seoul Samsung Thunders, will once again play a South Korean side - this time Jeonju - in the third-place match on Sunday. When asked about the prospect of facing the 36ers in the final, Sharks forward Nick Minnerath (207-PF-88, college: Detroit Mercy) said: "They're a tough team and we were trying to make it to the final, that was our goal, so we'll get it done tomorrow."

Singapore Slingers maintain composure to beat CLS Knights Indonesia 63-60 in ABL Finals Game 3 - 1 month ago
Not even harassment by stalkers after their morning training session could throw the Singapore Slingers off as they kept their focus and defeated CLS Knights Indonesia on Wednesday (May 8). The steely 63-60 win in Game 3 of the Asean Basketball League (ABL) Finals meant the Slingers have taken a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. In front of a partisan 3,000-strong capacity crowd armed with airhorns, drums and pot covers at the GOR CLS Kertajaya, both teams played good defence to restri...   [read more]

Singapore Slingers bounce back to rout CLS Knights 77-57 and level ABL Finals series at 1-1 - 1 month ago
After surrendering so meekly in Friday's chastening 86-67 Game 1 defeat by CLS Knights Indonesia in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) Finals, the Singapore Slingers returned to the OCBC Arena on Sunday (May 5) as different beasts. Neo Beng Siang's men were hungrier, faster and sharper as they routed the visitors 77-57 in Game 2 to get their best-of-five Finals series back on track. Even without starting American point guard Jerran Young, the Slingers played great defence and made their sh...   [read more]
