SEA Games 2022 : Indonesia ends PH's SEAG reign in men's 5x5 basketball - May 22, 2022
Indonesia ended the reign of Gilas Pilipinas as the kings of Southeast Asian Games men's 5x5 basketball. Newly naturalized player Marques Bolden (211-C-1998, college: Duke) and Abraham Grahita (180-PG-1995) teamed up to help score a massive 85-81 upset win for the Indonesians, in the battle for the region's hardcourt supremacy in the Vietnam Games on Sunday at the Thanh Tri Gymnasium. It was the first time since 1989 that the Philippines settled for a silver medal in the event which they had dominated in 18 of the last 21 editions. Bolden finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while team captain Abraham Grahita added 17 markers for the historic victory by the Indonesian national team mentored by former Gilas Pilipinas head coach Rajko Toroman (agency: BIG ). Indonesia led throughout the first three quarters, with their shots clicking and complemented by an effective defense against the Philippines. In the payoff period, Gilas tried to steal the lead, with Matthew Wright draining a triple in the last 39 seconds for a 79-81 deficit. Abraham Grahita was fouled in the next play and converted his two free throws, but Thirdy Ravena answered back with a layup for an 81-83 deficit for Gilas with five seconds left. Bolden, who had a short stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA, sank two free throws off a foul by Troy Rosario to clinch Indonesia's first-ever Southeast Asian Games gold medal in basketball. 'Obviously that's on me. I take full accountability and responsibility for the result. Like I said, they tried their best and that's sports. That's life. Sometimes, things don't work out the way we played,' Gilas head coach Chot Reyes took the blame on their disappointing finish. Wright finished with 23 points for Gilas, while June Mar Fajardo (210-C-1989) logged 20 markers and nine rebounds. Ravena was the other double digit scorer for Gilas with 17 points. Indonesia swept their six games for the golden finish, while the Philippines finished with a 5-1 slate for the silver medal.

SEA Games 2022: Fajardo toys with Vietnam as Gilas Pilipinas scores 4th win - May 20, 2022
June Mar Fajardo (210-C-1989) resumed his role as Gilas Pilipinas' main man as they stayed unscathed in the Southeast Asian Games with an 88-60 drubbing of host Vietnam on Thursday, May 19. Taking the back seat as his younger teammates stepped up in routs of Cambodia and Singapore, Fajardo churned out 25 points and 11 rebounds to power the Philippines to a 4-0 start in the round robin tournament. Nineteen-year-old Francis 'LeBron' Lopez continued to impress with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting to go with a pair of blocks as the Filipinos moved two wins away from capturing a 14th straight SEA Games gold. The Philippines faces Malaysia on Saturday before it tangles with fellow unbeaten team Indonesia on Sunday in what is deemed as the gold medal clash. Buoyed by the cheers of their fans at the Thanh Tri Gymnasium, Vietnam remained within striking distance in the third quarter and trailed by just 12 points, 42-54, until the Philippines rode on an 8-0 blitz led by Lopez. Kib Montalbo (185-G-1996) drained a triple and Lopez scored 5 straight points to give Gilas Pilipinas a 20-point lead, which grew to as big as 31 points in the final quarter as Vietnam sputtered. The Philippines scored twice as many as Vietnam, 26-13, in the fourth frame. Kiefer Isaac Ravena (181-G-1993) stuffed the stats sheet in the win with 12 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds, while his brother Thirdy put up 6 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals to finish with a staggering plus-minus of +19. Chris Dierker (200-F-1994, college: Madonna) topscored in the loss with 20 points for Vietnam, which absorbed its first loss after a 2-0 start. Vietnam is on track for a podium finish as it trails the Philippines and Indonesia (3-0) with three games left to play.
