QBL Round 9: Al Sadd is defeated by Al Gharafa- April 15, 2023
What a coincidence that all visitors won their games. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.
Al Arabi - Qatar Club 99-103 Very significant was Qatar Club's (#4) 103-99 road victory against 3rd placed Al Arabi. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Al Arabi. It was a key game for the top position in the league. Qatar Club made 28-of-36 charity shots (77.8 percent) during the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 33 assists. Al Arabi was plagued by 29 personal fouls down the stretch. American guard Brian Halums (196-1997, college: UAFS) nailed a triple-double by scoring 38 points (!!!), 12 rebounds, 12 assists and 9 steals for the winning side and Serbian Dejan Janjic (198-1995) accounted for 33 points (!!!), 8 rebounds and 8 assists. American-Nigerian guard Kelechi Ajukwa (201-1995, college: Charlotte) came up with 35 points (!!!), 9 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals and American Xavier Ford (203-1993, college: Buffalo) added 29 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 6 steals respectively for Al Arabi in the defeat. Al Arabi's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Qatar Club have a solid series of three victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Al Sadd and Al Shamal. Al Arabi at the other side dropped to the fourth place with three games lost. They share the position with Al Rayyan. Al Shamal looked well-organized offensively handing out 41 assists. The best player for the winners was Palestinian-Canadian forward Shane Osayande (200-1993, college: Saskatchewan) who had a triple-double by scoring 14 points, 15 rebounds, 15 assists and 4 blocks. American guard Sindou Diallo (190, college: Montana Tech) chipped in 20 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 6 steals. At the other side the best for losing team was American point guard Ameer Jackson (193-1994, college: WSSU) who recorded 15 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists and the other American import power forward Tony Criswell (205-1991, college: Missouri) added 13 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists respectively. Al Shamal keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Al Sadd and Qatar Club. Loser Al Khor still closes the standings with eight games lost. Hosts were edged by seventh ranked Al Gharafa (3-5) 89-87. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Al Sadd. Al Gharafa looked well-organized offensively handing out 33 assists. The former international forward Nedim Muslic (197-1998) stepped up with a triple-double by scoring 28 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) for the winners and American power forward CJ Aiken (206-1990, college: St.Joseph's, agency: BIG) chipped in 11 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. The best for the losing side was American-German forward Waverly Austin (211-1991, college: Oregon, agency: Diamond Sports) with a triple-double by scoring 27 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists and 6 blocks and international Faisal Abuissa (188-1999) scored 14 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Five Al Gharafa and four Al Sadd players scored in double figures. Al Gharafa moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Al Wakrah. Defending champion Al Sadd still keeps top position with two games lost. They share it with Qatar Club and Al Shamal. This time they crushed sixth ranked Al Wakrah (3-5) 117-85. Al Sadd dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Al Wakrah's 36. They outrebounded Al Wakrah 45-22 including a 32-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. Al Sadd looked well-organized offensively handing out 45 assists comparing to just 22 passes made by Al Wakrah's players. The best player for the winners was American-German forward Waverly Austin (211-1991, college: Oregon, agency: Diamond Sports) who had a triple-double by scoring 20 points, 18 rebounds, 18 assists and 4 steals. International forward Babacar Dieng (197-1997) chipped in 28 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Five Al Sadd players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Donte McGill (190-1995, college: FIU, agency: Green Sports Management) who recorded 35 points (!!!) and 6 steals and the other American import guard John Crosby (190-1996, college: Delaware St.) added 14 points and 6 steals respectively. Al Wakrah's coach gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Al Sadd have a solid series of three victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 6-2 record, which they share with Qatar Club and Al Shamal. Al Wakrah lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with five games lost. They share it with Al Gharafa.
