There were only 2 rounds played so far and it's still very beginning of the Regular Season in D1. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

Al Gharafa defeated Al Rayyan in Doha 79-61. American guard Franklin Session (187-89, college: CS Los Angeles) had a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!), 11 rebounds and 7 assists (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) to lead the charge for the winners and the other American import forward Nick Stover (198-93, college: S.Alabama) chipped in 23 points and 12 rebounds during the contest. Naturalized Senegalese forward Alioune-Badara Ndoye (199-86) responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds. Al Rayyan will play next round against strong Al Wakrah trying to get back on the winning streak. Al Gharafa will try to continue on its current victory against Qatar Sports Club. It will be extra interesting game as Qatar Sports Club is their local rival from Doha.
Important game to mention about took place in Doha. Al Arabi (1-0) saved a 3-point derby victory on the road edging Al Ahli (0-2) 97-94 on Saturday evening. Senegalese center Oumar Seck (208-88) notched a double-double by scoring 22 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort and Khalid Abdi supported him with 18 points and 8 assists. Even a double-double of 21 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists by American power forward Kenny Hall (206-90, college: Tennessee) did not help to save the game for Al Ahli. Al Arabi will play against Al Khor (#7) at home in the next round. Al Ahli will play against Al Khor and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Another interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Doha: Al Sadd (#4) and Qatar Sports Club (#7). Al Sadd (2-0) smashed visiting Qatar Sports Club (0-2) by 19 points 91-72. The best player for the winners was Andreja Milutinovic who had a double-double by scoring 24 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists. Aaron Rountree III produced a double-double by scoring 23 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals for the guests. Al Sadd's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Doha to the arena Al Shamal.

In the last game of round 2 winless Al Khor lost to undefeated Al Wakrah on the opponent's court 81-91.



Al Ahli - Al Arabi 94-97

Important game to mention about took place in Doha. Al Arabi (1-0) saved a 3-point derby victory on the road edging Al Ahli (0-2) 97-94 on Saturday evening. Strangely Al Ahli outrebounded Al Arabi 52-35 including a 20-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. Al Ahli was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. Senegalese center Oumar Seck (208-88) notched a double-double by scoring 22 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort and the former international swingman Khalid Abdi (198-87) supported him with 18 points and 8 assists. Even a double-double of 21 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists by American power forward Kenny Hall (206-90, college: Tennessee) did not help to save the game for Al Ahli. His fellow American import Julius Coles (193-89, college: Canisius) added 22 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Al Arabi will play against Al Khor (#7) at home in the next round. Al Ahli will play against Al Khor and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Al Wakrah - Al Khor 91-81

Rather expected game when Al Khor (0-2) was defeated on the road by Al Wakrah (2-0) 91-81 on Saturday. Strangely Al Khor outrebounded Al Wakrah 39-27 including a 18-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists comparing to just 15 passes made by Al Khor's players. Americans were the main players on the court. The best player for the winners was power forward Joshua Caldwell (203-91, college: William Penn, agency: SDJ Sports) who scored 38 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Guard Dee Oldham (193-94, college: Chattanooga, agency: Octagon Europe) chipped in 24 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals. Caldwell is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Al Wakrah players scored in double figures. Point guard Ameer Jackson (193-94, college: Winston Salem) produced a double-double by scoring 29 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists and forward Dominique Lacy (201-89, college: NC-Wilmington) added 25 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for the guests. Al Wakrah will meet Al Rayyan (#8) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Al Khor will play against Al Arabi in Doha and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Defending champion Ahli Shabab Dubai (D1) added to their roster 33-year old American (has also Iraqi passport) forward Sammy Monroe (198-85, college: Newberry). He played recently at Homentmen in Lebanese LBL league. He helped them to make it to the Supercup final. The last season Monroe played at Al Gharafa in D1 where in 18 games he had very impressive stats: 20.3ppg, 10.1rpg, 5.8apg (top 4) and 1.8spg.
