Al Arabi and Al Wakrah marched into the final of the Emir Cup basketball tournament yesterday. At the Gharafa Sports Club, Nick Stover (198-F-93, college: S.Alabama) scored 33 points and dished five assists as Al Arabi defeated Al Shamal 96-79 in the first semi-final. Arabi took the first quarter honours leading 20-19, but Arabi fought back to edge ahead 51-39 at the end of the second period. Arabi, however, came up with 16 points in the third quarter while restricting their rivals to just eight points to take an eight-point advantage into the final quarter. Nick Stover also excelled from three-pointer mark, drilling three out of five attempts. Khalid Sulaimen Abdi and William Byrd (201-G/F-85, college: Ark.-Pine Bluff) with 23 and 19 points respectively also excelled for the winners. For Al Shamal, Matthew Bryan-Amaning (205-F-88, college: Washington) scored 28 points and Dominic James (180-PG-86, college: Marquette) netted 18 points to take them to the second final since 2001, where they lost to Al Rayyan.
Later in the evening, Wakrah defeated defending champions Al Gharafa 87-76 in the second semifinal with the help of a fine 32-point effort by Ali Saeed Erfan (198-PF-83). Gharafa took six points (26-20) lead at the end of the first quarter and later maintained the three-point advantage till the third quarter. Wakrah came back strongly in the fourth to first tie the game at 67-67 and later won it with 14 points. Earnest Ross (196-G-91, college: Missouri, agency: MKP Management) Junior also contributed 19 points for the winners, while Todd O'Brien (211-C-89, college: UAB) scored 23 points for Gharafa. Al Gharafa and Al Shamal had advanced to the semi-finals with almost identical wins over Al Rayyan and Al Ahli respectively. Al Gharafa saw off Al Rayyan 92-83, while Hrvoje Pulijko excelled with 34 for Al Shamal as they edged out Al Ahli 91-84 on last Friday. The final will be played on Saturday, 21 April at 6:30pm.

26-year old guard Russell Byrd (201-G-92) put on an amazing game in the last round for league's best team Al Sadd and receives a Interperformances Player of the Week award for round 17. He had the game-high 37 points adding six rebounds and four assists for Al Sadd in his team's victory, helping them to crush Al Shamal (12-4) with 17-point margin 95-78. Here is the last round review presented by ESL. Fourth defeat of league's leader Al Shamal (12-4) against third ranked Al Sadd (12-4) 95-78 was the most important game of the last round. FRANKLIN SESSION American Franklin Session (187-G-89) had an amazing evening in the last round for Al Gharafa and that's him to receive a Interperformances Player of the Week award for round 16.
