Al Ahli edged out Qatar Sports Club 112-105 in a tense match that went into double overtime in the Emir Cup basketball tournament yesterday. Christopher Jones (186-G-90) with 38 was the top-scorer of the match, his five points in the second overtime proving handy as Al Ahli decisively turned the match in their favour. Jones was on the court for 48 minutes and he was ably supported by Nemanja Besovic (221-C-92) and Ayeni Olatokunbo who chipped in with 27 and 27 points, respectively. Qatar Sports Club maintained a slight advantage over the first two periods but Al Ahli bounced back in the third with vengeance to take a 68-60 lead. However, Al Ahli couldn't close out the match in the fourth quarter as Qatar Sports Club produced a 26-point effort to force the match into overtime with the scores on 86-all. The first overtime was evenly contested and with the scores again tied (98-98) forcing the match into another five minutes of added time. This time however, Qatar Sports Club lost the plot. After scoring the first four points, they stalled on 102 for more than two minutes during which Al Ahli scored 10 points to take a 108-102 lead. With a minute and 42 seconds remaining, Al Ahli clearly held a decisive advantage and they finished the job without further trouble. Baden Jaxen (190-G-90, college: N.Carolina) scored 32 points for Qatar Sports Club, while Nick West (208-F-94, college: Alabama A&M) had 23, while Yousuf Mohamed and Ahmed Abdulla scored 15 each.
In the second match of the day, Al Arabi capped a dominant performance with a 111-86 thrashing of Al Rayyan with Nick Stover (198-F-93, college: S.Alabama) topping the 50-point mark. Al Arabi were quick off the blocks, taking a 31-18 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, leading for 38.31 minutes of the match. Stove had a 76% field goal conversion rate in his 51 points, while William Byrd (201-G/F-85, college: Ark.-Pine Bluff) an Oumar Seck also chipped in with 23 and 19, respectively. For Al Rayyan, Devon Walker scored 20 and Terrell Stoglin (185-G-91, college: Maryland, agency: Octagon Europe) 15.
