Al Sadd bag Qatar Mens League crown - Feb 18, 2013

Al Sadd pulled off a masterful dominance of powerhouse Al Rayyan in their do-or-die finals showdown to clinch their first ever Qatar Mens League championship last night at the Al Gharafa Indoor Arena.

Coach Dejan Tomics wards outgunned their counterparts in the endgame to run away with a nail-biting 69-64 victory that gave the club its first QML title since its birth 32 years ago.

Sadd Hasan Abdulrahman connected on a trey to push Al Sadd to a 68-64 advantage, with 31 seconds left in the game and Salman pulled a heist in the ensuing possession to keep Al Sadd at bay with 18 seconds remaining in the game.

With Al Sadd down 1-7 midway in the first period, Thomas Ibrahim and Salman combined to push the Emir Cup champions to within a basket, 7-9.

Internationalist Tanguy Ngombo (197-F-84) would then join hands with Boney Watson (183-PG-78, college: Sam Houston St.) and veteran Erfan Saeed to pummel the defending champions to 19-9 lead as time went down to 2:15 in the period.

Aside from Michael Southall (210-C-82, college: La-Lafayette) s twinner inside the paint, Al Sadds guns went silent thereon while Ngombo and Erfan continued the Rayyan onslaught that got the black shirts soaring away 27-15 after ten minutes of play.

With Southall forced to leave the floor on foul trouble at the onset of the second period, Mousa Daoud took charge and spearheaded an 11-4 surge to get Al Sadd to a manageable deficit, 26-31.

Rayyan woke up in time and came back with a string of fast break points making it 35-26 before Daoud and Hasan Abdulrahman each connected on outside bombers to keep Al Sadd closer at 31-25.

Boney Watson sank a put back in the ensuing play and later fed Ngombo who beat the halftime buzzer with a trey for a 40-31 count at halftime.

Suleiman Braimoh broke the ice in the third canto with successive twinners inside the paint towing Rayyan farther away at 45-31 before Southall and company managed a couple of baskets for a 45-35 count.

Behind fierce battles for ball possessions and exchange of baskets, Daoud and Sadd masterminded a 15-7 attack to threaten their foes, 50-52, with 1:45 left in the period.

Boney Watson would however lead his teammates to a 6-1 run to cap the quarter with Rayyan still ahead, 56-53.

El Jaish-Al Rayyan 62:70

Al Rayyan clinched Heir Apparent Cup 2013 as they overcame their rivals El Jaish in the Final game. Al Rayyan posted a 70:62 win over last years runners-up El Jaish.
El Jaish looked better in the beginning of the game and grabbed 9-7 lead after the first 5 minutes. Moreover they dominated the rest of the period and took 17:9 advantage at the end of the first period. Rayyan however shrugged off the initial sluggishness opening the second quarter with a 10-1 run and then went on build a 6-point lead going into the locker-room break.Al Rayyan led 38:31 early in the third period and enjoyed 47:42 at thee nd of 30 minutes. Al Rayyan created a 14-6 run later in the fourth period and finished the game with an 8-point lead.
Tanguy Ngombo (197-F-84) top-scored for the winners with 21 points and 7 rebounds, while Boney Watson (183-PG-78, college: Sam Houston St.) contributed 17 points besides dishing out 7 assists. Yasseen Ismail had 14 points and 8 rebounds before being named the Player of the Tournament. Turki Ali replied with 17 points in the losing effort, while Antonio Anderson (198-G-85, college: Memphis) and Mohammad Yussuf each adding 12 points. Bakir Mohammed followed them with 11 points in a loss.

Al Rayyan lifts Emir Cup up in the country. They completed a grand double in the QBF season beating defending champions Al Sadd 76:66 in the final.
Al Rayyan trailed 8:9 in the first period, but closed the frame at 22:19. Moreover they pushed the tempo and reached 37:28 midway through the second period. Al Rayyan increased to 10 points at the halftime and never looked behind. Al Sadd reduced to 9 points in the third period, but the winners closed the frame at 61:47. They led 67:45 with 5 minutes to go and finished the game with 10-point deficit.
Tanguy Ngombo (197-F-84) top-scored for the winners with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Boney Watson (183-PG-78, college: Sam Houston St.) had a triple-double of 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. MUSA Yaseen nailed 11 and SA EED Erfan brought 10. Rashad Anderson (195-G/F-83, college: Connecticut) replied with 21 points in the losing effort and Ibrahima Thomas (210-F-87, college: Cincinnati) collected 19 points and 19 boards. SOUTHAL Micheal had 18, while DE LA ROSA added 5.
