The most exciting game of round 5 in the PBA took place in Pasig City. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of 12th ranked Titan UGR (1-4) to fifth ranked Painters (3-1) 112-111 on Sunday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Painters moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams. Titan UGR lost fourth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with four games lost. Rain or Shine is looking forward to face Terrafirma Dyip (#11) in Makati City in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Titan UGR will have a break next round.
Important game to mention about took place in Manila. Ninth ranked Beermen (2-2) saved a 2-point victory at home edging 8th ranked Kings (1-3) 83-81 on Sunday evening. stepped up with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks for the winners and John Calma chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds. Center Japeth Aguilar (206-1987, college: WKU) responded with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. SM Beermen moved-up to sixth place. Ginebra Kings at the other side dropped to the ninth position with three games lost. They share it with Terrafirma Dyip and Phoenix. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
The game between second ranked FiberXers (3-1) and 8th ranked Masters (1-3) in Makati on Saturday ended with biggest points difference. FiberXers beat guests from Quezon 128-114. Juan Gomez De Liano nailed a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 assists for the winning side. Ricci Rivero came up with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for Phoenix in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. FiberXers maintains second place with 3-1 record behind leader TNT Tropang, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Masters dropped to the ninth position with three games lost. They share it with Ginebra Kings and Terrafirma Dyip. FiberXers will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Phoenix will play against Hotshots (#3) and hope to win that game.
In the last two games of round 5 Terrafirma Dyip was beaten by Hotshots on the road 104-93. NLEX RW won against Meralco Bolts on its own court 89-85.
The most impressive performance of 5th round was 17 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks by June Mar Fajardo of SM Beermen.
