PBA Round 1 (Regular Season): Meralco Bolts fire past FiberXers

The Regular Season in PBA just started. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Bolts edged FiberXers in Manila 91-89. 29 personal fouls committed by FiberXers helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Guard Chris Newsome (187-1990, college: Georgetown, KY) stepped up and scored 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and center Raymond Almazan (206-1989) chipped in 13 points and 12 rebounds. At the losing side forward Justine Arana (201-1999) responded with 23 points and 6 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. FiberXers will play next round against Blackwater trying to get back on the winning streak. Bolts will try to continue on its current victory against Phoenix in Quezon.
Bossing recorded a loss in Caloocan City. Hosts were rolled over by Hotshots 106-84. American forward Zavier Lucero (198, college: Cal Maritime) nailed 21 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side and Ian Paul Sangalang accounted for 15 points and 10 rebounds. Canadian forward Christian David (198-1998, college: Butler) came up with 31 points and 5 rebounds for Blackwater in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Hotshots will play against SM Beermen in Manila in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Bossing will play on the road against FiberXers in Makati to get more than just one victory in their record.
Quite upsetting was Terrafirma Dyip's 38-point home defeat in a game versus Meralco Bolts who smashed hosts CJ Cansino fired 19 points for the winners. Louie Sangalang produced 23 points and 7 rebounds for lost side. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Meralco Bolts will meet Phoenix in the next round which should be another easy win for them. Terrafirma Dyip will play against North Port in Pasig City and hope to win that game.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 1: winless Phoenix lost to Terrafirma Dyip on the opponent's court 87-95. Winless NLEX RW lost to undefeated SM Beermen in a home game 89-98. Winless Phoenix recorded a loss to FiberXers on the road 83-92.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 9 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists by Justine Baltazar of FiberXers.



Terrafirma Dyip - Phoenix 95-87

Terrafirma Dyip used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Quezon 95-87 on Friday night. Terrafirma Dyip forced 21 Phoenix turnovers. Strangely Phoenix outrebounded Terrafirma Dyip 55-38 including 19 on the offensive glass. Forward Louie Sangalang (193) fired 21 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Naturalized American point guard Stanley Pringle (184-1987, college: Penn State, agency: Pensack Sports) chipped in 17 points. Naturalized American forward Kai Ballungay (201-2001, college: CS Stanislaus) produced a double-double by scoring 30 points and 15 rebounds and Raul Soyud (196-1991) added 11 points and 5 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Terrafirma Dyip will meet North Port in the next round. Masters will play against Meralco Bolts and hope to win that game.

Guard Robert Bolick (185-1995) produced 12 points and 8 assists (made all of his eight free throws) and forward Michael Angelo Miranda (196-1990) added 15 points respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Beermen will meet at home Hotshots in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Warriors will play against Rain or Shine in Manila and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Bolts looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Terrafirma Dyip's players. Guard CJ Cansino (188-1999) fired 19 points for the winners. Kier Quinto (188-1994) chipped in 13 points and 5 assists. Forward Louie Sangalang (193) produced 23 points and 7 rebounds and guard Aljun Melecio (173-1998) added 11 points and 5 assists respectively for lost side. Five Bolts and four Terrafirma Dyip players scored in double figures.
