PBA Round 13 (Regular Season): Meralco Bolts hand first defeat to SM Beermen

SM Beermen (10-1) recorded its first loss in Manila on Saturday night. Hosts were edged by seventh ranked Meralco Bolts (6-5) 95-92. It ended at the same time the ten-game winning streak of SM Beermen. Meralco Bolts dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to SM Beermen's 40. Meralco Bolts looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Naturalized American Clifford Hodge (196-1988, college: HPU) fired a double-double by scoring 20 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. Guard Chris Newsome (187-1990, college: Georgetown, KY) chipped in 17 points and 6 assists. Center June Mar Fajardo (210-1989) produced a double-double by scoring 23 points, 19 rebounds and 4 assists for lost side. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Meralco Bolts have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to third place, which they share with 4 other teams. SM Beermen at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Hotshots (6-5) against sixth ranked TNT Tropang (6-5) on Sunday night. Host Hotshots were defeated by TNT Tropang in a tough game in Pasig City 93-98. Worth to mention a great performance of forward Kelly Williams (201-1982, college: Oakland) who helped to win the game recording 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Jayson Castro William contributed with 18 points and 7 assists for the winners. Power forward Ian Paul Sangalang (201-1991) answered with 21 points and 7 rebounds for Hotshots. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. TNT Tropang moved-up to third place, which they share with 4 other teams including defeated Hotshots.
Very important is a home loss of second ranked Ginebra Kings (7-4) against seventh ranked NLEX RW (6-5) on Sunday night. Host Ginebra Kings were defeated by NLEX RW in a tough game in Manila 72-76. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Ginebra Kings. Robert Bolick stepped up and scored 25 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for the winners. At the losing side Christian Standhardinger responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. NLEX RW moved-up to third place, which they share with 4 other teams. Loser Ginebra Kings keep the second position with four games lost.

In the last game of round 13 Phoenix was crushed by Blackwater in Caloocan City 102-83.




Blackwater - Phoenix 102-83

Everything could happen in Caloocan City at the game between two tied teams. Both tenth ranked Blackwater and 11th ranked Phoenix had identical 3-7 record. This time Blackwater used a home court advantage and crushed the opponent from Quezon 102-83 on Saturday night. Blackwater outrebounded Phoenix 62-46 including a 25-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. Blackwater looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Forward Jeth Troy Rosario (201-1992) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 14 rebounds for the winners and guard Frederick Tungcab (185-1997) chipped in 19 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Five Blackwater players scored in double figures. At the losing side naturalized American forward Jason Perkins (193-1992, college: VCSU) responded with 22 points and 8 rebounds and guard Jayjay Alejandro (180-1995) scored 14 points and 5 assists. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Blackwater maintains tenth place with 4-7 record. Phoenix lost third consecutive game. They keep the eleventh position with eight games lost.
