Jonathon Simmons gets MVP of the Week award for Filipino PBA (by Hoops Agents)- February 7, 2023
The 33-year old guard had the game-high 38 points adding seven rebounds and five assists for NLEX RW in his team's victory, helping them to edge out Phoenix (#9, 1-4) 98-94. It allowed NLEX RW to jump to the first place in the Filipino PBA. They maintain a perfect record without any lost game in the league. The season is still on an early stage, but NLEX RW already had a very good start winning all 4 without losing a single one. In the team's last game Simmons had a remarkable 70.0% from 2-point range and got five three-pointers out of 11 attempts. He turned to be NLEX RW's top player in his first season with the team. University of Houston graduate has very impressive stats this year. Simmons is league's best scorer averaging so far 37.0ppg. Simmons is in league's top in assists (7th best: 5.0apg) and averages solid 61.3% FGP. The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young American forward Justin Brownlee (197-F-1988) of Ginebra Kings. Brownlee impressed basketball fans with a triple-double of 29 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Of course Ginebra Kings cruised to a 116-108 relatively comfortable win over Rain or Shine (#12, 0-3). This victory allowed Ginebra Kings to move up to 6th position in the standings. His team has extremely good start of the season. They won their first game. However the season is at the beginning, so everything can happen. They still may lose their high position in the standings. Brownlee is well-known by Ginebra Kings fans and he already established his position as one of team's most reliable players. St. John's University alumni Brownlee played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. The third best performed player last round was American Du'Vaughn Maxwell (201-F-1991) of Phoenix (#9). Maxwell showcased his all-around game by recording 25 points, eleven rebounds (!!!) and seven assists in the last round. Despite Maxwell's great performance Phoenix lost 94-98 to the league's current leader NLEX RW (#1, 4-0). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. Phoenix can only dream about fighting for top spots in the league. They have rather bad season and 1-4 record places them close to the bottom of the standings. Maxwell has individually a great season in Philippines. After only 5 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 26.0ppg (8th best) and rebounds with 14.4rpg (2nd best). Other top performing players last week: 4. K.J. McDaniels (198-G/F-1993) of Meralco Bolts - 24 points, 15 rebounds and 8 assists 5. Allein Maliksi (191-F-1987) of Meralco Bolts - 30 points and 3 rebounds 6.
