PBA Round 6: NLEX RW lose their first game against Phoenix

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most surprising game was the first loss of NLEX RW (2-1) in Makati City on Saturday night. Hosts were defeated by twelfth ranked Phoenix (1-3) 111-97. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of NLEX RW. They outrebounded NLEX RW 49-38 including 36 on the defensive glass. Phoenix looked well-organized offensively handing out 31 assists. 26 personal fouls committed by NLEX RW helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American power forward Kaleb Wesson (208-1999, college: Ohio St.) had a double-double by scoring 22 points, 21 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Javee Mocon (193-1995) chipped in 23 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists during the contest. Phoenix's coach used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was American Earl Clark (208-1988, college: Louisville) with a double-double by scoring 36 points (!!!), 20 rebounds and 8 assists. It was the only win of guest team this round and in all other games host teams recorded victories. Phoenix maintains twelfth position with 1-3 record. NLEX RW at the other side keeps the third place with one game lost. They share the position with Ginebra Kings. Phoenix are looking forward to face higher ranked Ginebra Kings (#3) in Manila in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. NLEX RW will play at home against the league's second-placed Hotshots where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.
Very important is a road loss of first ranked Bay Area D. (4-1) against seventh ranked Ginebra Kings (2-1) on Sunday night. Visiting Bay Area D. was defeated by Ginebra Kings in Manila 111-93. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Bay Area D.. American forward Justin Brownlee (197-1988, college: St.John's) notched a double-double by scoring 46 points (!!!) and 12 rebounds to lead the effort and Scottie Thompson supported him with 8 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Even a double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds by Canadian Andrew Nicholson (206-1989, college: St.Bonaventure) did not help to save the game for Bay Area D.. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Ginebra Kings moved-up to third place, which they share with NLEX RW. Newly promoted Bay Area D. still keeps top position with one game lost. Ginebra Kings will play against Phoenix (#12) in Quezon in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Bay Area D. will have a break next round.
TNT Tropang has finally registered their first victory this season after one consecutive losses. The win is especially important as they outplayed much higher ranked North Port (2-2) 117-93 on Saturday. The best player for the winners was Roger Ray Pogoy who scored 32 points (on 12-of-14 shooting from the field). At the other side the best for losing team was Prince Ibeh who recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points and 12 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. TNT Tropang (1-1) left bottom position moving up to eighth place, which they share with SM Beermen. Loser North Port dropped to the fifth position with two games lost. They share it with Rain or Shine and Blackwater Elite. TNT Tropang will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. North Port will play against Blackwater Elite (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last game of round 6 Rain or Shine lost to SM Beermen on the opponent's court 105-113.

TNT Tropang - North Port 117-93

TNT Tropang has finally registered their first victory this season after one consecutive losses. American forward Cameron Oliver (203-1996, college: Nevada) chipped in a double-double by scoring 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was American-Rwandan center Prince Ibeh (208-1994, college: Texas) who recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points and 12 rebounds and guard Robert Bolick (185-1995) added 14 points and 7 assists respectively. SM Beermen - Rain or Shine 113-105

There was an upset in Manila where higher ranked Rain or Shine (2-2) was defeated by twelfth ranked SM Beermen (1-1) 113-105 on Sunday. SM Beermen dominated down low during the game scoring 74 of its points in the paint compared to Rain or Shine's 48. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The best player for the winners was American power forward Diamond Stone (210-1997, college: Maryland) who had a double-double by scoring 42 points (!!!) and 13 rebounds. Center June Mar Fajardo (210-1989) chipped in 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was American forward Steve Taylor Jr (206-1993, college: Toledo) who recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points, 18 rebounds and 9 assists and guard Rey Nambatac (179-1994) added 19 points and 6 rebounds respectively. Five Rain or Shine players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Defending champion left bottom position moving up to eighth place, which they share with TNT Tropang. Loser Rain or Shine dropped to the fifth position with two games lost. They share it with North Port and Blackwater Elite. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

American forward Justin Brownlee (197-1988, college: St.John's) notched a double-double by scoring 46 points (!!!) and 12 rebounds to lead the effort and guard Scottie Thompson (188-1993) supported him with 8 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Brownlee is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Ginebra Kings players scored in double figures. Even a double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds by Canadian Andrew Nicholson (206-1989, college: St.Bonaventure) did not help to save the game for Bay Area D.. British-Canadian guard Glen Yang (193, college: Mount Royal) added 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Ginebra Kings moved-up to third place, which they share with NLEX RW. Newly promoted Bay Area D. still keeps top position with one game lost.
