PBA Round 13 (Philippine Cup): SM Beermen defeat Blackwater Elite in the closest game of the week

The most exciting game of round 13 in the PBA took place in Manila. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 4th placed Blackwater Elite (5-3) to first ranked SM Beermen (8-1) 110-107 on Sunday evening. SM Beermen shot 30 for 43 from the free-throw line, while Blackwater Elite only scored eight points from the stripe. SM Beermen forced 19 Blackwater Elite turnovers. 33 personal fouls committed by Blackwater Elite helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Center June Mar Fajardo (210-1989) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 18 rebounds for the winners and guard Jaymar Perez (188-1993) chipped in 23 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. At the losing side American guard Rashawn McCarthy (185-1989, college: Old Westbury) responded with 22 points and 4 steals. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. SM Beermen have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 8-1 record. Blackwater Elite at the other side keeps the fourth position with three games lost. They share it with Meralco Bolts and Hotshots. SM Beermen are looking forward to face bottom-ranked Terrafirma Dyip (#12) in Makati City in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Blackwater Elite will play on the road against NLEX RW (#8) in Makati City and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.

Guard Chris Newsome (187-1990, college: Georgetown, KY) nailed 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side and Raymond Almazan accounted for 6 points and 15 rebounds. Center Japeth Aguilar (206-1987, college: WKU) came up with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 13 rebounds for Ginebra Kings in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Meralco Bolts moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Hotshots and Blackwater Elite. Defending champion Ginebra Kings keep the third position with three games lost. Meralco Bolts will play against Hotshots (#5) in Pasig City in the next round. Ginebra Kings will have a break next round.

There was an upset in Caloocan City where 4th placed Blackwater Elite (5-3) was defeated by eleventh ranked Rain or Shine (3-6) 107-90 on Wednesday. Rain or Shine made 27-of-31 free shots (87.1 percent) during the game. Guard Rey Nambatac (179-1994) fired 26 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Guard Gian Mamuyac (180-1999) chipped in 20 points and 5 rebounds. American forward Brandon Rosser (201-1994, college: UC Riverside) produced 19 points and Renato Ular added 13 points and 9 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Rain or Shine moved-up to ninth place.
