PBA Round 8: Hotshots edge North Port by one point

There will be only one (last) round of the Regular Season in PBA. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most exciting game of round 8 in the PBA took place in Pasig. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of 7th ranked North Port (4-5) to third ranked Hotshots (7-3) 90-89 on Friday evening. Hotshots looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The best player for the winners was power forward Ian Paul Sangalang (201-91) who had a double-double by scoring 26 points and 10 rebounds. Naturalized American forward Calvin Abueva (190-88) chipped in 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Center Gregory Slaughter (216-88, agency: BeoBasket) produced 21 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Hotshots moved-up to second place. North Port at the other side keeps the seventh position with five games lost. Hotshots are looking forward to face SM Beermen (#4) in Manila in the next round. North Port will play on the road against Rain or Shine in Manila and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

TNT Ka Tropa's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Makati to the arena Alaska Aces.
Bottom-ranked Blackwater Elite (0-10) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 90-73 loss to seventh ranked NLEX RW (5-5) in Caloocan City on Thursday evening. Worth to mention a great performance of JR Quinahan who helped to win the game recording 16 points and 8 rebounds. Simon Enciso responded with 17 points and 7 assists. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. NLEX RW moved-up to sixth place. Loser Blackwater Elite still closes the standings with ten games lost. NLEX RW will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Blackwater Elite will play against Meralco Bolts (#3) in Manila and hopes to get finally their first victory.

Rest of the games of round 8 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Ginebra Kings defeated Phoenix in Manila 94-87. Terrafirma Dyip was beaten by Meralco Bolts at home 83-95. Phoenix was destroyed by SM Beermen on the opponent's court 110-80. Ginebra Kings unfortunately lost to Alaska Aces in a home game 75-89.
The best stats of 8th round was 17 points and 12 rebounds by Scottie Thompson of Ginebra Kings.



TNT Ka Tropa - North Port 102-92

Leader TNT Ka Tropa delivered the ninth victory. This time they beat 7th ranked North Port (4-5) 102-92 in Makati. Naturalized American guard Michael Williams (188-91, college: CS Fullerton) orchestrated the victory by scoring 29 points and 5 assists. Guard Kib Montalbo contributed with 22 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Guard Robert Bolick (185-95) replied with a double-double by scoring 12 points, 5 rebounds and 11 assists and forward Kevin Ferrer (194-93) added 17 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for North Port. Four TNT Ka Tropa and five North Port players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Phoenix - Ginebra Kings 87-94

There was no surprise in Quezon where 9th ranked Phoenix (4-7) was defeated by seventh ranked Ginebra Kings (4-6) 94-87 on Wednesday. Worth to mention a great performance of naturalized American point guard Stanley Pringle (184-87, college: Penn St., agency: Pensack Sports) who helped to win the game recording 31 points and 7 rebounds and naturalized German forward Christian Standhardinger (206-89, college: Hawaii) who added 21 points and 12 rebounds during the contest. Naturalized American forward Jason Perkins (193-92, college: VCSU) responded with 30 points and 8 rebounds and naturalized Canadian guard Matthew Wright (193-91, college: St.Bonaventure) scored 18 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Phoenix's coach rotated thirteen players in this game, but that didn't help. Despite that victory Ginebra Kings went down to eighth position due to points difference. Loser Phoenix keeps the ninth place with seven games lost.

Terrafirma Dyip - Meralco Bolts 83-95

No shocking result in a game in Makati City where fourth ranked Meralco Bolts (6-2) defeated 10th ranked Terrafirma Dyip (3-7) 95-83 on Thursday. Worth to mention a great performance of Kier Quinto (188-95) who helped to win the game recording 17 points and 8 rebounds and center Raymond Almazan (206-89) who added 11 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. Five Meralco Bolts players scored in double figures. Power forward Joseph Gabayni (196-94) responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds and forward Aldrech Ramos (198-88) scored 15 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Meralco Bolts moved-up to third place. Terrafirma Dyip lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the eleventh position with seven games lost. Meralco Bolts will meet at home bottom-ranked Blackwater Elite (#12) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Terrafirma Dyip will play against Alaska Aces and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

NLEX RW outrebounded Blackwater Elite 66-40 including a 22-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of JR Quinahan (198-84) who helped to win the game recording 16 points and 8 rebounds and Guamanian guard Jericho Cruz (182-90) who added 8 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists during the contest. Four NLEX RW players scored in double figures. American guard Simon Enciso (180-91, college: NDN) responded with 17 points and 7 assists and Carl Cruz (193-91) scored 14 points. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. NLEX RW moved-up to sixth place. Loser Blackwater Elite still closes the standings with ten games lost. Very expected game in Manila where 9th ranked Phoenix (4-7) was rolled over by fifth ranked SM Beermen (6-3) 110-80 on Friday. SM Beermen made 21-of-26 free shots (80.8 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of guard Jaymar Perez (188-93) who helped to win the game recording 24 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and center June Mar Fajardo (210-89) who added 18 points and 11 rebounds during the contest. Naturalized Canadian guard Matthew Wright (193-91, college: St.Bonaventure) responded with a double-double by scoring 10 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists and naturalized American forward Jason Perkins (193-92, college: VCSU) scored 18 points and 9 rebounds. Four SM Beermen and five Phoenix players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. SM Beermen moved-up to fourth place. Loser Phoenix keeps the ninth position with seven games lost. SM Beermen will meet league's second-placed Hotshots in the next round and it may be the game of the week.
