PBA Round 6: SM Beermen hand first loss to TNT Ka Tropa

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most surprising game was the first loss of TNT Ka Tropa (6-1) in Makati on Wednesday night. Hosts were defeated by sixth ranked SM Beermen (4-2) 83-67. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of TNT Ka Tropa. SM Beermen dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to TNT Ka Tropa's 36. They outrebounded TNT Ka Tropa 61-36 including a 20-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a good game for naturalized American swingman Marcio Lassiter (190-87, college: CS Fullerton) who led his team to a victory with 19 points and 6 rebounds. Center June Mar Fajardo (210-89) contributed with 8 points and 17 rebounds for the winners. Guard Kib Montalbo replied with 13 points and 4 assists for TNT Ka Tropa. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. SM Beermen moved-up to fourth place. TNT Ka Tropa at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. SM Beermen's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Manila Rain or Shine.
Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Manila: Ginebra Kings (#8) and Rain or Shine (#5). Rain or Shine was defeated at home 77-83 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. Center Japeth Aguilar (206-87, college: WKU) had a double-double by scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Christian Standhardinger chipped in 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was Beau Belga (198-86) with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Ginebra Kings (3-3) moved-up to seventh place. Rain or Shine at the other side dropped to the sixth position with four games lost. Ginebra Kings will play against league's leader TNT Ka Tropa in Makati in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Rain or Shine will play on the road against SM Beermen (#4) in Manila and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of NLEX RW. Calvin Abueva notched a double-double by scoring 23 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort. Even 21 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists by Jericho Cruz did not help to save the game for NLEX RW. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Hotshots moved-up to second place. Loser NLEX RW dropped to the fifth position with three games lost. Hotshots will meet at home Rain or Shine (#6) in the next round. NLEX RW will play against North Port in Pasig and hope to secure a win.

In the last two games of round 6 Terrafirma Dyip was beaten by Phoenix on the road 96-84. North Port destroyed Blackwater Elite on its own court 98-73.
The most impressive performance of 6th round was 17 points and 12 rebounds by Jamie Malonzo of North Port.



Hotshots - NLEX RW 112-105

An interesting game for Hotshots (6-2) which hosted in Pasig City 4th ranked NLEX RW (4-3). Third ranked Hotshots managed to get a 7-point victory 112-105. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of NLEX RW. Hotshots forced 19 NLEX RW turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Naturalized American forward Calvin Abueva (190-88) notched a double-double by scoring 23 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort and power forward Ian Paul Sangalang (201-91) supported him with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Even 21 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists by Guamanian guard Jericho Cruz (182-90) did not help to save the game for NLEX RW. Raul Soyud (196-91) added 7 points and 16 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Hotshots moved-up to second place. Loser NLEX RW dropped to the fifth position with three games lost. Hotshots will meet at home Rain or Shine (#6) in the next round. NLEX RW will play against North Port in Pasig and hope to secure a win.

There was a small surprise when tenth ranked Phoenix (3-5) beat 7th ranked Terrafirma Dyip (3-5) in Quezon 96-84 on Thursday. Phoenix made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Phoenix outrebounded Terrafirma Dyip 49-36 including a 37-26 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Naturalized American forward Jason Perkins (193-92, college: VCSU) notched 28 points and 4 assists to lead the effort and naturalized Canadian guard Matthew Wright (193-91, college: St.Bonaventure) supported him with 15 points and 4 assists. Even 11 points and 8 rebounds by power forward Joseph Gabayni (196-94) did not help to save the game for Terrafirma Dyip. Forward Aldrech Ramos (198-88) added 13 points. Four Terrafirma Dyip players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Guard Robert Bolick (185-95) notched a double-double by scoring 17 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the effort and forward Jamie Malonzo supported him with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Four North Port players scored in double figures. Even 14 points and 7 rebounds by center Frank Golla (193-90) did not help to save the game for Blackwater Elite. American guard Simon Enciso (180-91, college: NDN) added 8 points and 7 assists. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. North Port moved-up to tenth place. Loser Blackwater Elite still closes the standings with eight games lost. North Port will meet at home higher ranked NLEX RW (#5) in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Blackwater Elite will play against Phoenix (#8) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
