PBA Round 3: TNT Ka Tropa rally past Phoenix

Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

TNT Ka Tropa smashed Phoenix in Makati 110-91. TNT Ka Tropa dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Phoenix's 36. They outrebounded Phoenix 51-39 including 22 on the offensive glass. TNT Ka Tropa looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when TNT Ka Tropa made 10 blocks. 31 personal fouls committed by Phoenix helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a great evening for Roger-Ray Pogoy (189-92) who led his team to a victory scoring 30 points and 5 rebounds. Power forward John-Paul Erram (203-89) helped adding 18 points and 15 rebounds. The best for the losing side was naturalized Canadian guard Matthew Wright (193-91, college: St.Bonaventure) with 31 points and 6 rebounds (went 13 for 13 at the free throw line !!!). Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Phoenix will play next round against strong Ginebra Kings trying to get back on the winning streak. TNT Ka Tropa will try to continue on its current victory against Blackwater Elite in Caloocan City.
Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Manila: Ginebra Kings (#2) and Meralco Bolts (#6). Ginebra Kings (3-0) won against visiting Meralco Bolts (1-2) 105-91. It was an exceptional evening for naturalized American point guard Stanley Pringle (184-87, college: Penn St., agency: Pensack Sports) who led the winners and scored 16 points and 7 rebounds. Japeth Aguilar accounted for 20 points. Forward Reynel Hugnatan (193-78) came up with 16 points and 7 rebounds for Meralco Bolts in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Ginebra Kings will play against Phoenix (#5) in Quezon in the next round. Meralco Bolts will play on the road against Hotshots in Pasig City and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Manila between Rain or Shine and North Port. Rain or Shine (3-0) got a very close home victory over North Port (0-3). Rain or Shine managed to escape with a 2-point win 70-68 on Sunday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. The best player for the winners was Rey Nambatac who scored 10 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Sean Anthony who recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and 12 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Rain or Shine will meet Alaska Aces (#8) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. North Port will play against NLEX RW (#11) and hopes to get finally their first victory.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 3: winless NLEX RW lost to Blackwater Elite on the opponent's court 88-98. Alaska Aces managed to outperform Hotshots in a home game 87-81. SM Beermen managed to beat Columbian Dyip on the road 105-98.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 20 points and 14 rebounds by Arwind Santos of SM Beermen.



Blackwater Elite - NLEX RW 98-88

Very expected game in Caloocan City where NLEX RW (0-3) was defeated by Blackwater Elite (2-1) 98-88 on Saturday. Blackwater Elite outrebounded NLEX RW 60-46 including 17 on the offensive glass. The best player for the winners was forward Celeponio Trollano (191-92) who had a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Rommel Canaleta (198-82) chipped in 18 points and 7 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was guard Kiefer-Isaac Ravena (181-93) who recorded 17 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals and Myke Ayonayon added 20 points and 6 rebounds respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Blackwater Elite will meet TNT Ka Tropa in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. NLEX RW will play against North Port (#12) in Pasig and hopes to get finally their first victory.

There was a small surprise in Makati where Alaska Aces (1-2) defeated Hotshots (1-2) 87-81 on Saturday. They outrebounded Hotshots 49-30 including a 38-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was guard Jeron-Alvin Teng (190-94) who scored 19 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Vic Manuel (193-87) chipped in 9 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was point guard Andy Barroca (176-88) who recorded 16 points and 5 assists and point guard Jiovani Jalalon (175-92) added 11 points and 4 assists respectively. Four Hotshots players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Alaska Aces will meet at home Rain or Shine (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Hotshots will play against Meralco Bolts (#7) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
