PBA Round 1: TNT Ka Tropa defeat Alaska Aces

The Regular Season in PBA just started. The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The round ended with derby games and favorites losing the games. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

TNT Ka Tropa defeated Alaska Aces in Makati 100-95. TNT Ka Tropa made 17-of-21 free shots (81.0 percent) during the game. They also forced 23 Alaska Aces turnovers. 25 personal fouls committed by Alaska Aces helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Roger-Ray Pogoy (189-92) fired 45 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds for the winners. point guard Jayson Castro William (180-86) chipped in 28 points and 5 rebounds. American guard Robbie Herndon (191-93, college: SF State) produced 16 points and 8 rebounds for lost side. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Alaska Aces will play next round against Meralco Bolts trying to get back on the winning streak. TNT Ka Tropa will try to continue on its current victory against SM Beermen in Manila.
Hotshots recorded a loss in Manila. Visitors were defeated by SM Beermen 94-78. Worth to mention a great performance of forward Arwind Santos (193-81) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 18 points and 15 rebounds. Moala Tautuaa contributed with 20 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Power forward Ian-Paul Sangalang (201-91) answered with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds for Hotshots. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. SM Beermen will play against TNT Ka Tropa in Makati in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Hotshots will play at home against NLEX RW to get more than just one victory in their record.
An interesting game was played in Makati City where Ginebra Kings beat host NLEX RW 102-92 on Sunday evening. Aljon Mariano stepped up and scored 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. At the losing side Kevin Alas responded with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Ginebra Kings will meet at home Blackwater Elite in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. NLEX RW will play against Hotshots in Pasig City and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
We should not miss the game where Rain or Shine against SM Beermen where Rain or Shine won at home by four points 87-83. Javee Mocon nailed 25 points and 6 rebounds (made all of his eight free throws) for the winning side. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Rain or Shine's next round opponent will be Columbian Dyip in Makati City which should be theoretically an easy game. SM Beermen will play at home against TNT Ka Tropa and hope to win that game.
The game in Quezon was also quite interesting. Meralco Bolts played at the court of Phoenix. Phoenix did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 116-98 on Monday. Matthew Wright fired 36 points (!!!) and 6 assists for the winners. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Phoenix will face North Port in Pasig in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Meralco Bolts will play at home against Alaska Aces and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 1 winless North Port lost to undefeated Blackwater Elite in Caloocan City 89-96. Winless Columbian Dyip lost to undefeated TNT Ka Tropa at home 101-112.
The best stats of 1st round was 40 points (!!!), 11 rebounds and 5 assists by Bobby-Ray Parks of TNT Ka Tropa.



SM Beermen - Hotshots 94-78

Hotshots recorded a loss in Manila. Visitors were defeated by SM Beermen 94-78. SM Beermen forced 21 Hotshots turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of forward Arwind Santos (193-81) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 18 points and 15 rebounds. Naturalized Tongan center Moala Tautuaa (200-89, college: Chadron St.) contributed with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Power forward Ian-Paul Sangalang (201-91) answered with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds and forward Jackson Corpuz (193-89) added 16 points and 13 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) in the effort for Hotshots. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. SM Beermen will play against TNT Ka Tropa in Makati in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Hotshots will play at home against NLEX RW to get more than just one victory in their record.

An interesting game was played in Makati City where Ginebra Kings beat host NLEX RW 102-92 on Sunday evening. Ginebra Kings looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Swingman Aljon Mariano (190-92) stepped up and scored 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and guard Scottie Thompson (188-93) chipped in 12 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Five Ginebra Kings players scored in double figures. At the losing side point guard Kevin Alas (183-91) responded with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists and JR Quinahan (198-84) scored 26 points. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Ginebra Kings will meet at home Blackwater Elite in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. NLEX RW will play against Hotshots in Pasig City and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Phoenix - Meralco Bolts 116-98

The game in Quezon was also quite interesting. Meralco Bolts played at the court of Phoenix. Phoenix did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 116-98 on Monday. Phoenix made 27-of-33 free shots (81.8 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists. Meralco Bolts were plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Naturalized Canadian guard Matthew Wright (193-91, college: St.Bonaventure) fired 36 points (!!!) and 6 assists for the winners. Naturalized American forward Jason Perkins (193-92, college: VCSU) chipped in 17 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Guard Chris Newsome (187-90, college: NMHU) produced 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists and guard Kris Rosales (183-90, college: HIU) added 8 points and 10 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Phoenix will face North Port in Pasig in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Meralco Bolts will play at home against Alaska Aces and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
