PBA D-League: Gab Banal dedicates Go For Gold title to ailing father Joel - Aug 23, 2018

Badly wanting to win for his ailing dad, Gabriel Banal (191-F-90) scored 31 points to lead Go For Gold to a 102-92 victory over Che'Lu Bar And Grill and the championship of the 2018 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig on Thursday. Go For Gold closed the title series in 5 games. Banal dedicated the team's victory to his father Joel Banal, the former PBA player and champion head coach who was hospitalized recently due to a heart attack. "My dad was enough motivation for me," Banal said in an article posted on ABS-CBN Sports. Besides unloading 21 of his 31 points in the first half, Banal also grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 4 assists to rescue the Scratchers in the fourth quarter. Through his efforts, he helped Go For Gold erect a 20-point lead, but Chris Bitoon rallied Che'Lu to cut the deficit to 5, 86-81, with more than 5 minutes remaining. But Banal orchestrated an 8-0 run for the Scratchers on their way to the crown. Matthew Salem (191-F) added 15 points, while Kristoffer Porter (198-C-94) tallied 14 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. "From the start, I really felt we're the best team, not because of me but because the players. They are that talented and I told them, you just have to want it more," said coach Charles Tiu .
Bitoon led Che'Lu Bar and Grill with 20 points and 4 rebounds.

The 2019 PBA All-Star Week will be in Calasiao, Pangasinan, PBA commissioner Willie Marcial announced Tuesday. Marcial also said the league will do away with its Luzon-Visayas-Mindanao format which has been the PBA's way of staging the festivities for the past two years. 'Calasiao won the bidding so we will stage the All-Star Week there in March,' said Marcial during the preseason press conference at Conrad Hotel. 'It's only going to be in one city.' Last year, the annual spectacle was he...   [read more]
