Philippine Patriots opened ASEAN League semifinal series against KL Dragons with victory. Gabe Freemen erupted for 36 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists to ensure the victory. The second game of the best-of-three series is scheduled for January 26 in Malaysia.
The first term was an evenly matched contest. Neither side dominated and the scoreboard read 18:18 after ten minutes. Gabe Freeman (198-F-85, college: Costa Mesa JC) and Allan Salangsang gave an 8-point lead for the hosts midway through the second term. Soon Benedict Fernandez (183-G-84) stretched the margin to 12 points 39:27. But the Dragons managed to trim the deficit at 6-point mark at halftime 35:41. Justin Leith (201-F-81, college: Merrimack) and Yeo Seng John Ng leveled things up at 47 midway through the third stanza. The teams traded baskets but the Patriots were able to pull in front 64:59 with ten minutes remaining. Lingganay and Guganeswaran put KL Dragons up by one 71:70 early in the fourth stanza but the hosts immediately answered with five points in a row to stay in charge. Gabe Freeman came up with timely five points to put the Patriots up by 9 points and they hung on to the win the battle.
Steve Thomas (203-F-81, college: Middle Tenn.St.) provided 11 points and 13 boards for the Patriots. Benedict Fernandez added 10 points in the win. Nakiea Miller (205-C-79, college: Iona) responded with 23 points and 7 rebounds for KL Dragons. Justin Leith had 26 points and 6 boards in defeat.

Ginebra Kings - Hotshots 108-112 Hotshots upset Ginebra Kings to win the semifinal series. Hotshots made 19-of-20 free shots (95.0 percent) during the game. They also forced 19 Ginebra Kings turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. American-FYR Macedonian Romeo Travis (198-84, college: Akron) fired a double-double by scoring 50 points (!!!) and 13 rebounds (on 20-of-26 shooting from the field) for the winners. EUGENE PHELPS Seoul Samsung Thunders (KBL) signed 28-year old American forward Eugene Phelps (198-90, college: Long Beach State). He played last summer at Phoenix in Filipino PBA league. In 13 games he had very impressive stats: 28.6ppg, 18.8rpg, 3.3apg and 2.7bpg. He was also named League Player of the Week (3 times). Hotshots - Ginebra Kings 103-107 Ginebra Kings edged Hotshots to narrow the deficit in the series. Ginebra Kings shot 32 for 45 from the free-throw line, while Hotshots only scored eleven points from the stripe.
