PBA Governors Cup: Brown powers Purefoods to Championship
Derrick Brown (197-F-73, agent: BIG, college: Providence) fulfilled his promise to lead his team to the championship as he led Purefoods to a 91-76 game 7 victory over the Alaska Aces.
Brown fulfilled the promise he made earlier in the year by scoring 21 points and leading Purefoods out of a 0-2 deficit and finally to its first ever championship in 5 years. Everything is going uphill for Brown now, he has won his first ever championship and has been invited to the Toronto Raptors training camp in the NBA.
Purefoods jumped to an early start with a surprising 24-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as Kerby Raymundo (200-C) and Kelvin Price (203-F-75, agent: Kreiter Keith, college: NC-Charlotte) helped Derrick Brown keep the Aces at bay. They also got a lot of help from veterans Alvin Patrimonio and Ronnie Magsanoc as each contributed 11 and 12 points respectively including clutch 3 pointers in the 4th quarter.
Purefoods not only won a game 7 for the first time in its history but it also instilled head coach Ryan Gregorio as the third youngest coach in PBA history to win a championship. He also became only the third coach to win a championship on his rookie year. This also gave Aces head coach Tim Cone only his second game 7 loss in 5 appearances.
Derrick Brown was adjudged the Best Import of the Conference, teammate Rey Evangelista (192-F-71) was awarded the Best Player of the Conference award and Kerby Raymundo was named the Finals MVP by the PBA press corps.
The PBA's second conference, the Commissioners Cup, will open on June 16.
