Barangay Ginebra San Miguel successfully retained their title after imposing
their mastery over the Meralco Bolts, 101-96, in Game 7 of the Governors'
Cup finals at the Philippine Arena Friday, October 27. Before a raucous
crowd of 54,086, an all-time attendance high for the PBA, the Gin Kings
fended off a late comeback scare from Meralco to clinch their 10th
championship in franchise history. Ginebra led by as much as 20 points in
the second quarter, 52-32, before the Bolts made things interesting in the
fourth. With Meralco trailing by just 4 points after aJared Dillinger(195-G/F-84,

triple with 47 seconds left in the game, Ginebra milked the clock after
Garvo Lanete bricked his three-point attempt, rendering the Bolts's
potential fightback for naught. "I've always said we didn't come to Ginebra
to win one championship. We always want to win many championships," said
Ginebra coach Tim Cone, the league's winningest coach who added his 20th
title. "We're not gonna stop here. We've got more to get, more to come up."Lewis Tenorio(177-PG-84),
who led Ginebra with 26 points and 4 assists, was named Finals MVP and is
set to undergo surgery on his injured right elbow the following day,
Saturday. Despite playing hurt throughout, Tenorio averaged 13.3 points, 3.7

Thompson added 14 points, highlighted by back-to-back triples in the third

and Japeth Aguilar combined for 32 points, 15 boards, 11 assists and 5
blocks. "The feeling feels the same, even greater maybe," said Brownlee,
when asked how he felt about winning a second straight title. "Meralco was a
very tough team, they made us work very hard but it just feels great to be

had another monster performance of 26 points, 24 rebounds, 9 assists and two
blocks while Dillinger bounced back from his scoring woes with 20 points but
their efforts were not enough as Meralco is denied its first title in
franchise history for the second straight year. Despite dominating the
boards, 52-43, Meralco did not have a taste of the lead throughout the game.
The series looked to be a blowout when Ginebra jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but
Meralco rallied back to win two straight games before Ginebra won two of 3
at Philippine Arena.

San Miguel Beer came out in its Sunday best and was a team in a hurry, pulling away early en route to a 115-91 blasting of the TNT KaTropa to claim the PBA Commissioner's Cup championship before a crowd of over 10,000 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.
The Beermen flattened the Ka Tropa right in the early goings on a vicious start, and played relentlessly and ruthlessly all throughout for the emphatic victory that sealed their 4-2 triumph in the best-of-seven series.
A dominant team in the last three years, San Miguel nailed a follow-up on its all-Filipino title run and thus stayed on course for a grand slam - a feat last achieved in the league in 2014 by San Mig Coffee (now Star).
San Miguel, which has had its own grand slam in 1989 behind a team led by Ramon Fernandez, Ricky Brown, Samboy Lim and Hector Calma, improved its legacy with a 24th crown, five of those won by coach Leo Austria and his troops in the last eight conferences.
Alex Cabagnot delivered the first triple-double performance by any player in a finale in the last 12 years with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. He bagged the PBA Press Corps Cignal Finals MVP award.
Charles Rhodes, Marcio Lassiter, Arwind Santos and Chris Ross also played big as the Beermen asserted themselves as a dominant champion team and annexed a first Commissioner's Cup crown in 16 years.
They foiled the Ka Tropa's own title ambition in six games, pulling off earlier wins in Game Two, 102-88, in Game Three, 109-97, and in Game Five, 111-102.
A perfect chemistry among the SMB ace locals and Rhodes keyed SMB's success on where it failed in the last two years.
As the all-Filipino champs in 2015 and 2016, the Beermen missed a back-to-back feat in landing the wrong import then.
Rhodes proved to be tailor-made for the Beermen in a title run marked by a solid 17-5 win-loss slate. They never dropped back-to-back losses in the tourney.
Gilas Pilipinas' latest edition kicked off the closing stage of its SEABA buildup with a 125-112 conquest of the PBA Visayan selection in the third and last leg of the 2017 PBA All-Star Week at the Hoops Dome here Sunday night. Terrence Bill Romeo (180-PG-92) and Calvin Abueva (190-F-88), Team Phl's fantastic duo in the 2015 Changsha FIBA Asia meet, led the way as the Nationals came from behind in pulling off the win that spoke well of what they can offer in the FIBA sub-zone tourney slated May 12-18 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Abueva came through with 26 points and seven rebounds while Romeo collected 25 markers, four assists and two rebounds for the Nationals who also got huge lift from June Mar Fajardo (210-C-89), Troy Rosario and Roger Ray Pogoy (189-SG-92). Romeo, who sparked their chase in the second quarter then made crucial plays that sealed their win at the finish and won the Cloudfone All-Star MVP honors. The Visayan All Stars provided a challenge that could well help Gilas in its SEABA buildup. It could be the lone warm-up game by the Nationals for the SEABA event which presents the Philippines its lone crack at the FIBA Asia Cup in Beirut in August. Gilas coach Chot Reyes played two different sets of training pool members in the first two legs of the 2017 PBA All Stars sponsored by HMR Trading Haus, Mueller, Peak, Crystal Clear, Anako, Davco, Smart and Petron. Gilas and the Mindanao selection fought to a 114-114 stalemate in Cagayan de Oro then the national pool came from behind to turn back the Luzon All Stars, 122-111, in Lucena. Reyes played its SEABA lineup in the Cebu leg where Fajardo drew a number of fans and supporters including his family that came over from Pinamungajan, about a two-hour drive from here. Romeo sizzled with 13 points as he starred in their second-quarter charge to come to within three, 59-62, at the half. Abueva, a returning Gilas player after being left out of the Gilas team to the 2016 Manila Olympic qualifier, took over in the second half, pouring in 21, including a hot string of 11 markers to close the third period. The PBA Visayan side got to a strong start and led by 15 at 42-27. Lewis Tenorio (177-PG-84) led the team with19 points while James Yap and Jeffrei Chan (188-F-83) combined for 35 points with each one firing five treys each. Gilas Pilipinas Stuns Luzon All-Stars, 122-111 - Apr 29, 2017
A resilient Gilas Pilipinas side battled its way back from a huge second half deficit to stun fancied Luzon All-Stars, 122-111, Friday night in the second leg of the PBA All-Star week at the Quezon Convention Center here. The nationals went on a 17-0 run to close out the game the game behind big men Troy Rosario, Carl Bryan Cruz, and Kevin Ferrer (194-F-93) to clinch a second straight victory on the road in the mid-season spectacle. Rosario was later named by coach Chot Reyes as part of the 12-man roster to the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Championship. He was joined in the team by Calvin Abueva (190-F-88), Japeth Aguilar (206-C-85, college: W.Kentucky), Raymund Almazan, June Mar Fajardo (210-C-89), Jio Jalalon, Allein Maliksi, Roger Ray Pogoy (189-SG-92), Terrence Bill Romeo (180-PG-92), Jayson Castro, Matthew Wright, and Andray Blatche (211-F/C-86). 'We hope for your continuing prayers and support,' said Reyes afterwards. The trio of Rosario, Cruz, and Ferrer presided over the telling scoring binge in the final five minutes of the game to overcome a 111-105 deficit. Cruz's three-pointer gave Gilas the lead for good, 111-110, with 3:47 to go. The nationals trailed by as many as 81-64 in the third period on a Marcio Lassiter (190-G-87, college: CS Fullerton) three-pointer. 'I'm proud of them. Grabe yung kalaban naming ang gagaling. We came back from almost 20-down,' stressed Reyes. 'I told them inside the dugout that this is what the Gilas program is all about, fighting, fighting, fighting.' Wright of Phoenix was voted Coloudfone MVP of the game, repeating the same honor he shared with Rosario during the opener of the three-leg series in Cagayan de Oro last Wednesday. Jonathan Grey was a surprise leading scorer for Gilas with 19 points, while Wright and Mike Tolomia had 15 each. Japeth Aguilar had 18 points for the All-Stars, who absorbed a first loss in the road series after its Mindanao counterpart drew with the national team last April 26, 114-114. Marcio Lassiter's snipings sparked a 16-7 run by the All-Stars to turn around seven-point lead at the break to a 78-62 advantage. The lead ballooned to its biggest at 81-64 on another Lassiter trey. Earlier. Maverick Ahanmisi retained his title in the Cloudnine Obstacle Challenge, but new champions emerged in the Three-Point Shootout and the Slam Dunk contest. The Rain or Shine sophomore clocked 25.8 seconds to beat out Alex Cabagnot (26.7 seconds) to become the first back-to-back winner of the event since Jonas Villanueva won four straight from 2010 to 2013. In the most thrilling finish to the three side events of the mid-season spectacle, Allein Maliksi drained the final money ball just before the buzzer to claim the Three-Point shooting crown. The game-winner allowed the Star Hotshot gunner to edge out LA Tenorio in the three-man final, 20-18. Two-time defending champion Terrence Bill Romeo made the championship round but finished with only 17 points. Three-time winner Rey Guevarra also fell by the wayside as Chris Newsome (187-G, college: N.Mexico Highlands) finally redeemed himself from last year's defeat by winning the Slam Dunk crown. The Meralco guard won over James Forrester (190-G-89) in the final, 87-86, by repeating his signature 'three-ball juggle act' before slamming the leather off the backboard. PBA Mindanao All-Stars, Gilas Pilipinas Battle To A 114 Deadlock - Apr 27, 2017
In one of the most exciting and well-fought PBA All-Star Games ever, the PBA Mindanao All Stars and Gilas Pilipinas failed to resolve what was there to resolve in a 48-minute showdown. The PBA team rallied from a 12-point deficit in the third quarter and banked on a big trey by Mark Barroca (178-PG-86) in the last 49 seconds in fighting Gilas Pilipinas to a 114-114 deadlock in the 2017 PBA All-Star Game at the Xavier University Gym here Wednesday night. The PBA Mindanao selection could have even stolen the game in the end but Scottie Thompson failed to convert a drive off June Mar Fajardo (210-C-89). Troy Rosario, himself a Gilas aspirant playing for PBA Mindanao, led all scorers with 28 points while rookie All-Star player Matthew Wright top scored for Gilas with 22 markers including 4-of-5 three-pointers as they shared the Cloudfone All-Star MVP honors. Barroca, PJ Simon and Baser Amer were the others who ran a show for the Mindanaoans while Fajardo, Terrence Bill Romeo (180-PG-92), Roger Ray Pogoy (189-SG-92), Carl Bryan Cruz, LA Revilla (173-PG-89) and Mike Tolomia were the other national hopefuls who delivered significant numbers for coach Chot Reyes. It was a night to remember where Gilas also came out well prepared in the pre-game dance off and upstaged the PBA team for the P100,000 cash prize. Meanwhile, hometown player Glenn Khobuntin led his team to victory in the Shootings Stars event, beating the team of Cyrus Baguio and the quartet led by Jio Jalalon and Cagayan de Oro Mayor Oscar Moreno Jr. Rosario scattered 18 points as the PBA team led, 59-55, at the half. June Mar Fajardo and Arwind Santos each scored 21 points on a combined 15-of-22 FG shooting to lead San Miguel, which had to stave off a late rally from the never-say-die Ginebra quintet.
Fajardo, one of only two Beermen in the 2017 Gilas Pilipinas nationl pool (the other is seldom-used big man Arnold Van Opstal), added 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block to his tally, while Santos registered 8 boards, 2 dimes, and 2 rejections of his own.
Chris Ross had his most pedestrian scoring outing of the series, finishing with just a dozen points, but he showcased his versatlity again, putting up 10 assists, 8 rebounds, and 6 steals. He was named PBA Philippine Cup Finals MVP for the second year in a row.
Ginebra was paced by Japeth Aguilar's 26 points, while Sol Mercado and Joe Devance each dropped 20 markers in the loss.
