MBL Round 3 (Regular Season): Sarawak CW lose to Johor Tigers

Coincidentally all hosts won their games. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The biggest surprise of round 3 in MBL took place in Johor Baharu where host Johor Tigers (3-4) beat Fire Horse (4-3) 103-95 on Friday evening. Johor Tigers looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was American Kimani Lawrence (202-1998, college: Arizona St.) who had a double-double by scoring 32 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists (on 16-of-19 shooting from the field). His fellow American import Tyrone Lee (203-1990, college: GVSU) chipped in 18 points (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). At the other side the best for losing team was Australian center Jock Perry (216-1997, college: UC Riverside) who recorded a double-double by scoring 26 points and 11 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Fire Horse will play next round against strong NS Matrix trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Johor Tigers will try to continue on its current victory against Penang SY at home.
NS Matrix (6-1) recorded a loss on the court of Putrajaya. Visitors were defeated by Putrajaya 75-69. It was a good game for Guyanese-American center Anthony Moe (207-1990, college: Millersville) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 14 rebounds. Xian-Fu Ooi contributed with 24 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. South Sudanese-Australian forward Madut Akec (201-1999, college: Detroit) answered with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 18 rebounds for NS Matrix. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Putrajaya will again play against NS Matrix in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. NS Matrix will play against Sarawak CW and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in between Fire Horse and Penang SY. Fire Horse (4-3) got a very close home victory over Penang SY (3-4). Fire Horse managed to escape with a 3-point win 78-75 in the game for the second place. It was a great evening for Alexander Mudronja who led his team to a victory scoring 18 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. The best for the losing side was Frederick Lish with 27 points and 8 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Fire Horse will meet at home NS Matrix in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Penang SY will play against Johor Tigers in Johor Baharu and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Other games of round 3 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
bottom-ranked Putrajaya was defeated by Penang SY in a road game 70-66. Penang SY beat Johor Tigers at home 85-82. Sarawak CW lost to NS Matrix on the opponent's court 62-74.



Johor Tigers - Sarawak CW 103-95

Penang SY - Putrajaya 70-66

The game between closely ranked teams ended with Putrajaya's (2-6) road loss to Penang SY (3-4) 66-70 on Friday. Penang SY dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Putrajaya's 26. It was a great evening for American-Thailand point guard Frederick Lish (175-1988, college: USA) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 12 rebounds. American center Raymond Miller (204-1988, college: CS Fullerton, agency: Interperformances) helped adding 10 points and 10 rebounds. Four Penang SY players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was Guyanese-American center Anthony Moe (207-1990, college: Millersville) with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 20 rebounds and 4 blocks and the former international guard Tychique Bosango (192-2001) scored 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Penang SY will meet Johor Tigers (#4) in the next round. Putrajaya will play against NS Matrix and hope to secure a win.

A very close game took place in between Fire Horse and Penang SY. Fire Horse (4-3) got a very close home victory over Penang SY (3-4). Fire Horse managed to escape with a 3-point win 78-75 in the game for the second place. It was a great evening for Australian guard Alexander Mudronja (196-1999, college: SMC) who led his team to a victory scoring 18 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Point guard Wing-Jet Tan (180-1996) helped adding 22 points (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field). Four Fire Horse players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American-Thailand point guard Frederick Lish (175-1988, college: USA) with 27 points and 8 rebounds and Ukrainian forward Yevgen Sakhniuk (201-1995, college: Jefferson) scored 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. NS Matrix (6-1) recorded a loss on the court of Putrajaya. Visitors were defeated by Putrajaya 75-69. Putrajaya forced 20 NS Matrix turnovers. It was a good game for Guyanese-American center Anthony Moe (207-1990, college: Millersville) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 14 rebounds. International Xian-Fu Ooi (188-2000) contributed with 24 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. South Sudanese-Australian forward Madut Akec (201-1999, college: Detroit) answered with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 18 rebounds and American DeQuan Abrom (188-1996, college: Belm.Abbey) added 20 points in the effort for NS Matrix. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Putrajaya will again play against NS Matrix in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. NS Matrix will play against Sarawak CW and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Penang SY - Johor Tigers 85-82

There was a small surprise when Penang SY (3-4) edged at home Johor Tigers (3-4) 85-82 on Sunday. It was a great evening for Shu-Wen Lee (-1999) who led his team to a victory scoring 37 points (!!!). Ukrainian forward Yevgen Sakhniuk (201-1995, college: Jefferson) helped adding 12 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 blocks. The best for the losing side was American Kimani Lawrence (202-1998, college: Arizona St.) with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 16 rebounds and the other American import forward Terrence Thompson (203-1994, college: Wake Forest) scored 19 points and 6 rebounds. Four Johor Tigers players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Penang SY will again meet Johor Tigers (#4) in the next round. Johor Tigers will have a break next round.

There was a minor upset when Fire Horse (4-3) was defeated on the road by NS Matrix (6-1) 74-62 on Sunday. NS Matrix dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Fire Horse's 18. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when NS Matrix made 7 blocks. It was a great evening for South Sudanese-Australian forward Madut Akec (201-1999, college: Detroit) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 12 rebounds. The former international forward Yi-Hou Wong (195-1996) helped adding 19 points. The best for the losing side was Australian center Jock Perry (216-1997, college: UC Riverside) with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 12 rebounds and the former international point guard Yong-Gan Wee (178-1998) scored 21 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. NS Matrix will meet Sarawak CW in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Fire Horse will play against Penang SY and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
