WLBL Round 13 (Regular Season): Club Beirut beat Antranik in a derby game

The Regular Season in WLBL is slowly approaching the end. But there may be still some important changes in the final standings in the last 3 rounds. Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Beirut: Club Beirut (#1) and Antranik B. (#5). Antranik B. was crushed at home by 30 points 29-59 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Antranik B.. Club Beirut held Antranik to an opponent 19.0 percent shooting from the field compared to 35.0 percent accuracy of the winners. They outrebounded Antranik 46-35 including 33 on the defensive glass. Leila Abi Ghosn (178-1989) fired 9 points and 17 rebounds for the winners. Jocelyne Geara chipped in 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Stephany Haddad produced 7 points and 10 rebounds for lost side. Antranik B.'s coach Ellie Salameh gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Undefeated Club Beirut (15-0) have an impressive series of fifteen victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with a perfect record of 15 victories in a row. Antranik at the other side keeps the fifth position with eight games lost. They share it with Hoops. Club Beirut are looking forward to face Champs (#4) in the next round. Antranik's supporters also look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Beirut to the arena Hoops.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Beirut. Second ranked Al Riyadi faced 3rd placed Homentmen. Host Al Riyadi (13-1) smashed guests from Antelias (11-3) 79-48. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Homentmen A.. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international center Tamara Khalil (185-1986) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 20 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Rebecca Akl contributed with 19 points, 8 assists and 4 steals for the winners. Al Riyadi's coach El Terek Omar felt very confident using 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Perla Nasr answered with 11 points and 7 rebounds for Homentmen. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Al Riyadi. They maintain second place with 13-1 record having just three points less than leader Club Beirut. Homentmen at the other side keeps the third position with three games lost. Al Riyadi will play against Almtayleb (#7) in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Homentmen will play against Taadod (#10) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
The game in was also quite interesting. Sixth ranked Hoops (7-8) played at the court of 8th ranked Chiyah (3-12). Hoops managed to secure a 9-point victory 56-47 on Wednesday. Joya Feghali stepped up with a double-double by scoring 11 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 7 steals for the winners. Hoops' coach Ziad Al Natour used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. At the losing side Sabine Fakherddine responded with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks. Hoops moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Antranik. Chiyah lost their third game in a row. Newly promoted team keeps the eighth position with 12 games lost. They share it with NSA. Hoops' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Beirut Antranik.

In the last two games of round 13 Almtayleb was defeated by Champs in a road game 59-45. Bottom-ranked Taadod was beaten by NSA at home 32-34.

Champs - Almtayleb 59-45

There was no surprise when 7th ranked Almtayleb (4-10) was defeated on the road by fourth ranked Champs (9-5) 59-45 on Tuesday. Champs forced 23 Almtayleb turnovers. The former international forward Nancy Maalouf (174-1988) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds for the winners and point guard Sandra Beddawi (168-1992) chipped in 15 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. At the losing side Mathilda Khalil responded with 17 points and Yasmina Samra scored 13 points. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Newly promoted Champs maintains fourth place with 9-5 record. Almtayleb lost their fourth game in a row. They keep the seventh position with ten games lost. Champs will meet league's leader Club Beirut on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Almtayleb will play against the league's second-placed Al Riyadi (#2) and hope to secure a win.

Taadod - NSA 32-34

The game between closely ranked teams ended with ninth ranked NSA's (3-12) road victory over bottom-ranked Taadod (1-14) 34-32 on Wednesday. NSA held Taadod to an opponent 22.9 percent shooting from the field compared to 22.0 percent accuracy of the winners. NSA forced 32 Taadod turnovers. Strangely Taadod outrebounded NSA 43-29 including a 32-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Rachelle Aoun stepped up and scored 7 points and 8 rebounds for the winners and Melissa Chedid chipped in 10 points. NSA's coach Badih Souaid allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. At the losing side Sandra Sleiman responded with 4 points and 18 rebounds and Lynn Abdallah scored 2 points and 10 rebounds. NSA moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Chiyah. Taadod lost their twelfth game in a row. Taadod at the other side, also newcomer in the league, stay at the bottom position with 14 games lost. NSA will meet at home Chiyah (#8) in the next round. Taadod will play against Homentmen in Antelias and hope to win that game.
