Riyadi snatch seventh straight league title - May 9, 2011

Riyadi won their seventh straight Lebanese basketball league title with a 3-0 series sweep of Champville thanks to a 76-66 Sunday.

The Manara club completed an unbeaten playoff record having beaten Sagesse by the same margin in the semifinals before going onto dismantle Champville in the final.

Coach Ghassan Sarkis started with Miguel Martinez (188-G-88), Fadi Khatib (199-F-79), Yehia Sabra (196-F-85), Tyrone Anderson (193-G-84, college: Concord) and Lee Benson (208-F/C-73, agency: Paris Global Sports, college: Brown Mackie), while the home team starters were Ali Mahmoud (185-G-83), Omar El Turk (188-G-81, college: Dawson Coll.), Joseph Vogel (211-C-73, college: Colorado St.), Ahmad Ismail (201-F-76) and Nathanel Johnson (199-F-77, college: Louisville).

Champville started the game in a vigorous mood, showing swift ball rotation opening up easy shots. Riyadi on the other hand couldnt impose the tempo they wanted, only scoring two points in the first five minutes of play. The visitors continued to up the pressure throughout the first period, with Khatib and Anderson proving their worth as Champville took a 19-9 lead at the end of the quarter.

At the start of the second quarter, Riyadi found some momentum on the offensive end, reducing the lead to just three points midway through the quarter, thanks to Ahmad and Johnson, who took full advantage of the height mismatch they had under the basket. But the visitors got themselves back to the game, as Martinez and Mneimneh showed off their talents alongside Sarkis who hit two 3-pointers late on to guide Champville to a 39-30 lead.

After the halftime break, Champville knew they were on the right track to clinching their first win of the series starting the third quarter with high confidence and energy, as Khatib continued to shine. Champville were able to score 10 points in the first five minutes of the quarter until the home team players realized it was time to turn things over. Ahmad, Johnson and Vogel raised their level, scoring from everywhere on the court, thanks to some excellent offensive systems to give their team their first lead of the game, 56-55, at the end of the third quarter.

With one decisive quarter left, the visitors committed too many turnovers at a very crucial time of the game, opening the door for their opponents to play the fast tempo they love, as Ahmad and Johnson showed true leadership. At this stage everything seemed lost for Champville, as Riyadi dominated the fourth quarter, clinching a 76-66 win, and grabbing their seventh straight Lebanese League Championship.
