Defending champion Al Kuwait SC (D1) strengthened their roster with the addition of 31-year-old American 206cm forward JaKarr Sampson (college: St. John's) for the 2024-25 season. He played most recently at Beijing Royal Fighters in the Chinese CBA league. In 39 games, he recorded 8.6ppg and 4.9rpg last season. The previous (2022-23) season, he played for another Chinese team, Flying Leopards (also in CBA).
He has tried to make it to the NBA and played in the NBA Pro Summer League in 2016.
Sampson is a very experienced player. Thanks to his pro career, he managed to play on three different continents (Europe, Asia, and North America) in four different countries. He has played professionally in Italy (Virtus Bologna), NBA (Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets, Philadelphia 76ers, Sacramento Kings, and Indiana Pacers), and NBA G League (Indiana Mad Ants, Iowa Wolves, Delaware Blue Coats, and Windy City Bulls).
Sampson was voted to the D-League All-Star Game in 2017.
He graduated from St. John's University in 2014 and it'll be his 11th season in pro basketball.
The scouts describe him as a versatile player who can play multiple positions on the field. He has great speed and agility, allowing him to make quick plays and cover a lot of ground. His decision-making skills are top-notch, and he has a high basketball IQ. He excels in creating mismatches and exploiting the gaps between defenders. He is a team player who communicates well with his teammates and can lead by example. During games, he shows a high level of intensity and competitiveness, always giving his 100%. Overall, he is a well-rounded player with a lot of potential.
A long, athletic, slashing scorer excels at both offense and defense, known for being a noted shot-blocker and prolific rebounder on both ends of the court.
