Astana repeat as National League champions-May 6, 2023
Astana defended their National League title. They overcame Bary Atyrau 58-52 in the third game of the championship series to complete the sweep. Markell Johnson (188-PG-1998, college: NC State) scored 12 points to pace the champions.
Astana eked out a 22-20 lead after ten minutes. Barsy limited the visitors to just 13 points in the second period to pull within one at halftime 35-34. Astana however responded with a stifling defence of their own in the third term. They held the hosts to just 12 points and recorded a 2-point lead at the final break. Astana then went on to limit Barsy to just 6 points in the fourth frame and eased to the win. Valeriy Likhodey (205-PF-1986) posted 11 points for the winners. Astana celebrated Cup title in Kazakhstan beating Irbis 65-54 in the Final game. Being tied at 15-15, Astana grabbed the lead with a 20-11 rally in the second period. Moreover, they posted an 18-7 run in the third quarter, whilst Irbis closed the game with a 21-12 run. Oleg Balashov (185-PG-1999) top-scored for the winners with 20 points, while Rustam Murzagaliyev (190-G-1992) brought 14. Ruslan Aitkali (195-F-1997) netted 9 and Dmitriy Gavrilov (204-C-1986) notched 8.
