Japan’s women’s team win William Jones Cup- July 12, 2024Japan’s national women’s team yesterday beat Thailand 94-63 to win the William Jones Cup in Taipei without having lost a single game during the five-day tournament. Thailand fared well in the first two quarters, and were ahead 37-38 at halftime, but Japan turned the game around, leading 67-58 by the end of the third quarter. A flagging Thailand only managed to score five points in the fourth. Japan’s Haru Owaki (177-PF-2004) led the scoring with 21 points, 17 of which she scored in the fourth quarter.
Taiwan’s A team placed second in the tournament after beating the Philippines 82-66 and winning four of their five games during the tournament. Taiwan dominated in the first quarter, leading 26-10, but the Philippines fought hard and the remaining three quarters were close affairs, but the visitors could not make up the deficit. The Philippines’ Naomi Panganiban (163-PG-2006) led the scoring with 19 points, followed by Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting (179-F/G-1994) with 15. The Philippines placed third in the competition.
