Japan victoriously opened their 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Sopron. They upset Spain behind 20 points from Saki Hayashi (173-G-1995) and Evelyn Mawuli (180-C/F-1995) apiece.
Japan grabbed a 26-18 lead after the opening frame. Japan extended the lead in the second period. The Asian side ensured a 46-36 halftime advantage. Japan kept in charge throughout the third period. Japan entered the fourth period up by as many as 12 points and raced to a comfortable win at the end. Mai Yamamoto (163-PG-1999) chipped in 15 points for the winners. Raquel Carrera (188-C-2001) answered with 19 points, while Megan Gustafson (190-F-1996, college: Iowa) had 15 points in the loss.
