Our interview with coach Asad Alawi who is at the helm of Al Mina.

Coach, thank you for having a chat with Eurobasket. Could you please tell us something more about you? Iraqi basketball is still kind of exotic place on basketball map for most of people.

Thank you for having me here. My name is Asad Alawi , head coach of Al Mina club from top division in Iraq. It's been 3 years since I got promoted to head coach of the team, previously I coached youth categories. I know most basketball fans still don't know much or anything about my country. I hope more and more will start thinking about Iraq and basketball in a new way, as big potential and normal country.

How popular is basketball in Iraq among other sports?

I can say basketball keeps gathering more and more attention, has a big potential to be number 2 sport in the country. In my opinion it is already. Football, like all over the wolrd, is out of the competition.

How political and general situation affects sports right now? Is Iraq safe place to live now?

Of course it could be better, but yes - it is safe now. Basra, the city where we are located, is a big city with estimated population of 2,5 milion. Modern and friendly city where sport is very important for the local authorities. We have fantastic new Basra Sports City Complex with huge stadium and other facilities. People here are very nice, tourist and professional athletes from all around the world are kindly welcome.

Lets talk about your team - Al Mina. Last season was not that good for your team, in 2016 you have reached League Final, last year finished at 5th position. What are the expectations for this season?

As I mentioned above, we located in Al Maqal, Basra, and play in the Iraq Top Basketball League. We didn't start this season well, currently in the middle of the standings with 6-8 record with potential to get higher. Our goal is to enter Final Four, which may seem difficult. But we are about to strenght our roster with new signings so ... will see after the season ends.

Last years you regularly play in international cups like Arab Club Champs or WABA. Is this important for you as a coach, to compete with other basketball countries?

Of course. Especially for young local players, they can see where are they in basketball. Also, playing/practising with or against American players is extremely important for them.

Still lots of aspects to catch up, but most important my club wants to learn and participate in such cups. Also for me as I can see how other teams are coached, meet lots of great coaches from other teams/countries. I try to learn from every occasion.

Please imagine the future. Where do you see Iraqi basketball and youself in 5-10 years. Are there any chances to take basketball in your country to another, higher level?

They are always some expectations, but most important is to have good people in federation and clubs. I think right now the future is bright when we take a bigger picture. Of course we are still depending on the politics, unfortunatelly I cannot do anything in this matter.

Thank you and good luck in the reminder of the season.
