Japan nearly squandered an 18-point lead but recovered just in time to turn back Iran, 97-89, in the sixth and final window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers at the Azady Gym in Tehran on Thursday. The Akatsuki Five rolled on to a seventh straight victory after a 0-4 start in the tournament. More importantly, they boosted their chances to claim a return trip to the World Cup with a 7-4 win-loss record. Both teams are tied at second spot with identical records in Group F while the Philippines is clinging to a chance of returning to the big stage after an appearance in 2014 in Spain. Nick Fazekas (211-F/C-85, college: Nevada) was at the forefront of Japan's attack with 26 points on top of eight rebounds for the Akatsuki Five, who played without Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe. Makota Hiejima added 24 points, including a jumper with 42 seconds that extinguished Iran's rally, 95-87, before Yuki Togashi (170-PG-93) sealed the win with a pair of free throws. Joji Takeuchi (207-F/C-85) had 17 points on 2-of-3 shooting from the three-point area. Daiki Tanaka (191-SG-91) scored 10 markers. Like Japan, Iran was also missing veterans Hamed Haddadi and Nikkhah Bahrami. Without the two, the Iranians had a slow start. Midway through the fourth frame, the team was staring at an 18-point deficit, 89-71, after Takeuchi unloaded a couple of triples with a little over four minutes remaining. But Iran refused to fold. Mike Rostampour (203-F-91, college: Omaha) unleashed back-to-back three-pointers to detonate a 16-4 rally and move to within six, 93-87. But that was the closest Iran could get as Japan went on to win the match. Without Haddadi and Bahrami, Mohammad Jamshidi (199-SF-91) paced Iran with 33 points, two rebounds, and five assists. Sajjad Sajjad Mashayekhi (180-PG-94) scored 13 points, while Hamed Hosseinzadeh (186-PG-87) added nine markers.
