Petrochimi Bandar Imam BC survived the gallant stand of the Meralco Bolts to eke out a 79-74 win in their 2018 FIBA Asia Champions Cup semifinal match, held last night at Stadium 29 in Nonthaburi, Thailand. After a closely-fought final quarter which featured a lot of physicality and crucial calls from the referees, Iran's Petrochimi emerged victorious over the Bolts to grab a spot in the club tournament's gold medal game. With majority of the Iranian national team players in their roster, Petrochimi mustered enough firepower in the endgame to frustrate the Norman Black-mentored Philippine squad. An inspired and determined Meralco side caught the last ticket to the Champions Cup Final Four last Saturday via a 96-63 demolition of Lebanon's Al Riyadi. With a higher quotient over Group B opponents Mono Vampire and Al Riyadi, the Bolts barged into the semifinals round against Group A frontrunner Petrochimi. Up by a point at the start of the final frame, the Bolts even led by three, 61-58, at the 7:26 mark courtesy of two free throws from Allen Durham (198-F/C-88, college: Grace Bible). From there, the Mehran Hatami -mentored Iranian squad flexed their muscles and flaunted their toughness to outgun the Bolts for the rest of quarter. An Arsalan Kazemi (200-SF-90, college: Oregon) layup at the final 4:07 gave Petrochimi a six-point cushion, 72-66. The Bolts were able to cut the lead to four, but an ill-advised three-pointer from import Diamond Stone with 1:28 to go proved costly for the rallying Filipino quintet. Free throws from Behnam Yakchali and Farid Aslani (183-PG-88) in the dying seconds sealed the deal for Petrochimi, who earned a shot in giving Iran a possible sixth gold medal in the continental club showpiece. An altercation in the final 2:51 erupted as Rouzbeh Arghavan planted a 12-to-6 elbow to the back of the head of Durham, to which the American import retaliated with a shove. After a review of the melee, the referees assessed a disqualifying foul on the Iranian 7-footer. With 1:30 to go and Petrochimi ahead by just four points, the Bolts got the shorter end of the stick after a double foul was whistled on Durham and Yakchali, who was initially whistled for blocking. After another lengthy discussion by the officials, the call was changed to a double foul, which turned out to be Durham's fifth. Yakchali scored game-high 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Sajjad Mashayekhi (180-PG-94) chipped in 15 markers. Durham dished out a 27-point, 11-rebound double-double performance for Meralco. Stone contributed 15 points and five boards. With their height and heft, the Iranian ball club dominated the offensive boards against Meralco, 22-2. Second chance points were also in favor of Petrochimi, 23-2, as well as inside scoring, 46-28. The loss relegates Meralco to a battle for third place against the Seoul SK Knights of Korea, tonight at 7 PM. Then at 9:30 PM, Petrochimi clashes with Alvark Tokyo for the Champions Cup crown.
