Kochi, Kerala:
The inaugural season of Basketball League Kerala (BLK) Season 1, jointly promoted byStarting Five Sports Management Pvt Ltd & ABC Basketball League Pvt Ltd along with the Kerala Basketball Association is already creating international interest even before the opening tip-off on June 4 at the Regional Sports Centre Indoor Stadium at Kochi. th The league, which runs from June 4 to June 12, will bring together six franchise teams competing in Boys and Girls Under-14 and Under-19 categories, preceded by a three-day pre-season development camp designed to expose young players to a more structured and professional basketball environment. What is particularly significant is that the excitement surrounding the league is not limited to Kerala. Interest is emerging from Australia, Taiwan and the wider global basketball diaspora, highlighting the reputation Kerala basketball continues to enjoy internationally. Building on Kerala's Women's Basketball Legacy For decades, Kerala has been one of India's most important contributors to women's basketball, producing numerous international players, national champions and coaches who have helped shape Indian basketball. Among the most celebrated examples is Geethu Anna Jose, arguably India's most successful woman basketball player. In 2008, Geethu received a major international opportunity with the Ringwood Hawks in Australia. The exposure she gained overseas played a significant role in broadening her basketball journey and strengthening her standing as one of India's leading basketball icons. Her story remains a powerful reminder of how international exposure can transform the trajectory of talented players. It is this philosophy that underpins Basketball League Kerala creating opportunities for young athletes to access pathways that extend beyond state and national competitions. Australian Interest Through Adelaide Lightning As part of these efforts, BLK has attracted the attention of Adelaide Lightning, one of Australia's most respected professional women's basketball organisations competing in the Women's National Basketball League. Representatives associated with Adelaide Lightning will be observing the inaugural season and are expected to visit Kerala during June end to explore potential collaborations involving player development, coaching exchanges, talent identification and broader basketball ecosystem partnerships. The discussions are expected to focus particularly on youth development and opportunities for emerging Kerala Women players to gain international exposure. Taiwan Scouts to Watch Future Talent Adding to the international flavour, Starting Five Sports Management is currently processing requests related to training scholarship opportunities in Taiwan initiated by Ekalavyas Consultancies Pvt Ltd Scouts & officilas associated with Chuang Wei Junior School and Chung Hua Junior School, Taiwan are visiting Kerala during the BLK Season 1 and expected to closely monitor performances in the Under-14 category during the league. The initiative could potentially provide selected players with opportunities to experience Taiwan's highly structured school basketball system, which is widely recognised for its emphasis on player fundamentals, discipline and longterm development. More Than A Tournament According to organisers, Basketball League Kerala is intended to be far more than a youth tournament. The vision is to establish a long-term basketball development platform that connects Kerala's rich basketball heritage with emerging international opportunities. "Kerala has always produced outstanding basketball talent, particularly in women's basketball where the state has made a remarkable contribution to Indian basketball over several decades. The success of players like Geethu Anna Jose demonstrated what can happen when talent is given international exposure. Through Basketball League Kerala, we want to create more such pathways for the next generation," said P.Jacob, Director of Starting Five Sports Management. “With international observers, overseas development opportunities and growing interest from the global Malayali basketball community, the inaugural season of Basketball League Kerala represents not only the launch of a new competition but also an important step towards connecting Kerala's young basketball talent with the wider world” commented P.C.Antony, Secretary of the Kerala Basketball Association who felt extremely proud to be able to work together with Starting Five & ABC to make this happen. As the first ball is thrown up in Kochi on June 4, the league will showcase not just the future stars of Kerala basketball, but also the growing global relevance of the state's basketball ecosystem. |
