In a significant step towards strengthening the grassroots talent pipeline in Kerala, the Basketball League Kerala (BLK) has successfully launched its innovative “One Minute to Hoop” (OMH) Skill Challenge, receiving an overwhelming response of over 1130 entries across the Under-14 and Under-19 categories.

Designed by Starting Five Sports Management & Kerala Basketball Association in collaboration with ABC Basketball Development League Pvt Ltd as a high-intensity, performance-based assessment, the OMH challenge aims to identify and benchmark young basketball talent through a structured and scientific format. As the challenge evaluates players across three core basketball fundamentals - Shooting, Dribbling, and Defense, with each station conducted as a one-minute test of skill, speed, and consistency.

The initiative stands out for its ability to provide measurable performance metrics:
• Shooting: Accuracy and repetition (shots made vs attempted)
• Dribbling: Ball control and speed (distance covered)
• Defense: Agility and footwork (laps completed)

This structured evaluation model ensures a data-driven approach to talent identification, aligning with BLK’s larger vision of integrating analytics into player development.

Statewide OMH Event Schedule:Following the strong participation, the OMH Challenge will now be conducted across 7 centres in Kerala, enabling wide regional access for young athletes:-
• Trivandrum – 11th April Senate Hall Campus, University of Kerala
• Alappuzha – 12th April Jyothi Nikethan English Medium School
• Kottayam – 12th April St. Ephrems HSS, Mannanam
• Ernakulam – 13th April RSC Kochi
• Thrissur – 13th April Municipal Stadium, Chalakudy
• Kannur – 14th April Municipal Stadium, Thalassery
• Kozhikode – 14th April Silver Hills HSS

Building Kerala’s Next Generation of Players: The “One Minute to Hoop” challenge is more than just a competition—it is a statewide talent discovery platform aimed at creating a structured pathway into the Basketball League Kerala ecosystem. By combining grassroots outreach with standardized skill assessment, BLK is laying the foundation for a data-backed player development model in the state.

Speaking on the initiative, league officials highlighted that the response validates the growing interest in basketball among Kerala’s youth and reinforces the need for organized, scalable, and technology-driven talent identification systems.

With participation spanning multiple districts and categories, the OMH Challenge is expected to play a pivotal role in shortlisting high-potential players, who could eventually progress into the Selection Trials & Player auction process for the Franchisees to form their Teams.
“Measure your skill. Challenge your limits. One minute at a time.” - the core philosophy of OMH is now set to come alive across courts in Kerala this April, marking an exciting new chapter in the state’s basketball journey for the 6 franchisees of Basketball League Kerala - Trivandrum Capitals, Allapuzha Dolphins, Kottayam Bisons, Kochi Stallions, Thrissur Taskers & Calicut Warriors.
