Qatar overcame a late surge by Hong Kong to win 90-80 in the Asian Games Group C basketball match at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex yesterday. Qatar, which went into the last quarter with a 73-48 lead found themsleves at the receiving end as Hong Kong made a late assault scoring 32 baskets but they fell short by ten points. Hong Kong scored 16 baskets in the first three quarters while 27, 24, 22 to maintian a clear lead in all the three quarters. It was only inthe last quarter, Qatar were caught on the wrong foot as Hong Kong pressed the panic buttons to push Qatar on the defensive. Khalid Abdi (198-G/F-87) (19) top scored for Qatar while Mohamed Hassan Mohamed (17), Mohammed Mohd (15) and Moustafa Lashin (10) were the other significant scorers for the winners.

MICHAEL HOLYFIELD Beijing Bucks (NBL) added to their roster 26-year old American center Michael Holyfield (211-122kg-92, college: SHSU). He joins another USA player Marquis Weddle which is already in the roster. It is actually Holyfield's comeback to Beijing as he has played here before. What was supposed to be a tight game turned out to be a rout as the Singapore Slingers outclassed Hong Kong Eastern 101-70 in Game 1 of the Asean Basketball League (ABL) play-offs semi-finals on Friday (April 12). Coach Neo Beng Siang was all smiles in front of over 2,000 fans at the OCBC Arena and declared that this was a display of "real basketball". "We did well on both ends. Hong Kong Eastern pushed San Miguel Alab Pilipinas to the brink of elimination after pulling off a 90-88 win against the defending champions in Game 1 of their best-of-3 quarterfinal series in the ASEAN Basketball League quarterfinals at Hoopsdome, Cebu City on Friday.
