Shanxi welcomes back Russell

Mercedes Russell

Shanxi Flame (WCBA) tabbed 30-year old American 198cm center Mercedes Russell (college: Tennessee) for new season. It is actually her comeback to Flame as she has played here before. She played most recently at LA Sparks (WNBA). But in 20 games she just recently played she averaged only 1.7ppg and 1.2rpg last season. The last season she played at Flame. She also played for another Chinese team Xiamen.
In 2018 she was drafted by New York Liberty (WNBA) in second round (22nd overall).
The former University of Tennessee standout is in her eighth season in pro basketball.
Russell is a very experienced player. And here thanks to pro basketball she experienced life on four different continents. She is familiar with European, Asian, Australian and of course North American leagues. Russell has played professionally in Australia (Southside Flyers), Poland (Wisla), Turkey (Galatasaray) and WNBA (Seattle Storm).
Among many awards she won Australian WNBL championship title in 2024. She was voted to Eurobasket.com All-Turkish KBSL Honorable Mention back in 2021.
