Recently, according to relevant media reports, the Chinese Basketball Association has drawn up a preliminary timetable for the expansion of the CBA league and the future restoration of the promotion and relegation system. If this plan is successfully implemented, it will mark a new stage in the professionalization process of Chinese basketball and have a profound impact on the structure of both the NBL (National Men's Basketball League) and the CBA (Chinese Men's Basketball Professional League). According to the media reports, the reform will be initiated by a significant adjustment to the NBL schedule. The plan indicates that the next season of the NBL league will start much earlier, on December 20th. This move is highly symbolic. The opening date is only eight days later than the start of the new CBA season, and the league's conclusion is set for April 28, 2026, which is basically in line with the end of the CBA season. This active alignment and convergence in the schedule is no accident. It clearly conveys a signal: The Chinese Basketball Association is committed to transforming the NBL into a secondary league that is more closely linked to the CBA, laying a solid foundation for future player exchanges, commercial development, and especially the crucial promotion and relegation system between the two leagues. The long-standing issues faced by the NBL, such as insufficient attention, a short season, and disconnection from the top league, are expected to be systematically improved through this adjustment. The more notable plan lies in the expansion of the league and the return of the promotion and relegation system. Reports indicate that after the 2026 NBL season, the CBA league is expected to incorporate two NBL teams based on the principle of "only promotion, no relegation". This implies that the number of teams participating in the 2026-27 CBA season may increase from the current 20 to 22. The expansion is an effective solution to the contradiction of the fixed number of CBA teams and the lack of a top-level league platform for some basketball talent hotspots. This move can provide more promotion channels for capable clubs, stimulate the investment enthusiasm and competitive vitality of NBL teams, and also enable more regions to have their own CBA home teams, promoting a more balanced development of basketball across the country. For the NBL clubs that are expected to be promoted to the CBA, this is undoubtedly a huge development opportunity; for the entire Chinese basketball market, it will also inject new capital vitality and focus.
