Guangdong won 2004 title

North Beats South 110-102 in CBA All-Star Game
The 2004 CBA All-Star Night gave the league's NBA hopefuls the opportunity to shine for the fans and NBA scouts last night.
"I hope I can join the NBA in two years time," said Zhu Fangyu, a national team member who plays with the league leading Guangdong Hongyuan.
The 20-year-old forward won the three-point shootout in the skills competition, posting a record 24 points in the first round and defeating Li Nan 20-14 in the final.  During the game, he scored 13 points as the Northern all-star Tigers defeated the Southern Dragons 110-102 in Changsha, Hunan Province.
The Northern squad was led by 19-year-old Zhengdong Tang (215-C-84) (Tang Zhengdong), a 215 cm center from Jiangsu, the game's Most Valuable Player in his initial appearance at the annual event.  Tang is averaging 23.1 points and 14.8 rebounds after 18 games for the Jiangsu Dragons
"Yi Jianlian and Xue Yuyang may receive a higher profile in the media but I want to change that,"said Tang."The best way would be to play in the NBA."
Yi, the 16-year-old sensation who is listed at 212 cm, has been dubbed as the "Next Yao Ming" according to sina.com.  The Guangdong center and Xue Yuyang, a Denver Nuggets draftee, were both making their all-star debut.
"I have come here specifically to see these kids," said Leo Papile, a senior scout with the Boston Celtics who attended the game.  "You just have to look at the success of Yao Ming and the impact he is making on the NBA. He offers a good example for them."
In the slam dunk contest, the champion was Hu Guang, who impressed Vince Carter when Carter toured China in the summer of 2002.  An article by Mike Ball on July 24, 2002 at raptors.com noted that Hu, then a guard from the Nanjing military team, thrilled the crowd as he executed some of Carter's signature dunks. Impressed, but not intimidated, Carter stepped up and threw down a few of his own jams, sending the onlookers into a frenzy.
The other three finalists for the slam dunk contest were Rod Gregoire, Yi Jianlian and Jameel Watkins.   Hu got 98 points to beat Yi Jianlian, who had 96 points, in the final. Hu is now a substitute guard-forward with Shanxi who has gotten little playing time.
