Brunei Open Basketball Tournament 2019 off to a good start- July 29, 2019IN CONJUNCTION with the 73rd birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Brunei Open Basketball Tournament 'Lau Koon Lung Cup 2019' officially commenced last Saturday night at the New Village Basketball Court in Seria. Eight teams are competing in the tournament - SRI, YTE Basketball, Homestage Realty, Illonggo-Black, Systematic Living, Master G Collection, New Village, and JNL-Eagle-Red. Present as the guest of honour was Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin. Present to welcome the minister were Legislative Council member and Penghulu of Mukim Liang Yang Berhormat Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin, Belait District Officer Ramlee bin Haji Jamudin, President of the New Village Mutual Aid Association Yang Chow Min, Permanent Honorary Chairman of the New Village Mutual Aid Association Law Shiew Yuan, as well as members from the New Village Mutual Aid Association. The first match of the tournament saw Systematic Living defeating Master G Collection in a close game. Systematic Living had a slight advantage over their opponents ending the first quarter 14-16. Master G Collection had an impressive outing in the second quarter to catch up Systematic Living, however, failed to get over the line as they lost by a point, 30-29. Systematic Living regained their momentum and took their offence in the third and final quarters to pick up their first victory of the tournament. After the first game, the tournament continued with the official opening ceremony which saw the presentation of players' oath, followed by a meet and greet with the minister. The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports also officiated the start of the second game between SRI and YTE Basketball. Over the course of the match, both teams were on equal footing as they ended their third quarter with a tied score of 30-30. The game heated up in the fourth quarter as SRI were able to gain an advantage ending the match with an eight-point lead, 79-71. The President of the New Village Mutual Aid Association presented a token of appreciation to the minister and the Belait District Officer for their presence and support of the tournament. The finals and closing ceremony of the tournament will be held on August 6-7. |
