There was an upset when much higher ranked Yamagata (5-4) was defeated on the road by seventh ranked Niigata A. (1-8) 89-77 on Sunday. Niigata A. outrebounded Yamagata 44-30 including 29 on the defensive glass. Nigerian power forward Martins Igbanu (203-1997, college: Tulsa) fired a double-double by scoring 24 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Point guard Katsumi Takahashi (180-2000) chipped in 23 points and 7 assists. Four Niigata A. players scored in double figures. American TJ Holyfield (203-1995, college: Texas Tech) produced a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds and his fellow American import James Bell (196-1992, college: Villanova, agency: Slash Sports) added 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for lost side. Yamagata's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Niigata A. left bottom position moving up to sixth place, which they share with Iwate. Loser Yamagata dropped to the fourth position with four games lost. Niigata A. will meet higher ranked Fukushima (#5) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Yamagata will play against Bambitious N. in Nara and hope to secure a win.
