A very close game took place in Tianjin between Blue Whales and Pioneers. Seventeenth ranked Blue Whales (7-18) got a very close victory on the road over 18th ranked Pioneers (5-20). Blue Whales managed to escape with a 2-point win 117-115 in the fight for the seventeenth place. Blue Whales made 23-of-27 free shots (85.2 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. The best player for the winners was American point guard Marlain Veal (175-1996, college: SE Louisiana) who scored 41 points (!!!), 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Center Tianyi Meng (207-1999) chipped in 21 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Taiwanese guard Benson Lin (193-1999, college: Bryant) produced 32 points and American guard Quinndary Weatherspoon (190-1996, college: MSU) added 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for the hosts. Four Blue Whales and five Pioneers players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Blue Whales maintains seventeenth position with 7-18 record. Pioneers lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the eighteenth place with 20 games lost. Blue Whales will meet at home higher ranked Monkey Kings (#8) in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Pioneers will have a break next round.
